“The fuck you say.”

Another car drove down the road. I glanced toward it and saw the driver was Six, one of the Marchesis’ guards.

“Six is taking over here.”

“This isn’t a fucking game. I’m the one who knows this guy, and I’m the one who needs to track him down.” I was also the man he was after. I didn’t think he’d reveal himself to anyone else.

“No.” He lowered me to the ground, making sure my body slid along his. I bit back a groan when my ass slid over his hard, thick cock. He kept his arms tight around me, and I struggled, but I couldn’t break free without hurting him, and I didn’t really want to. I didn’t really want to get free, but I did want Donaldson back in custody or better yet, dead.

“I know you want me, Devil, but isn’t this a little elaborate?”

He burst out laughing, but he didn’t ease his hold on me. “You think I would do all this, lure you into the woods, fight you, get Six to take your place just for a quick fuck.”

“I didn’t say it would be quick, but yeah.”

“That’s… All right, fine. I might do that, but that’s not what this is.”

“Then what the fuck is it?” I struggled, wanting to turn around so I could see his face.

“Promise me you won’t go anywhere, and I’ll let you go.”

“I won’t go anywhere until we’re done talking.”

He worked his cock against the seam of my ass. “And then you’ll be leaving with me.”

“What if I decide to keep fighting you?”

“That’s fine, but I’ll win.”

“You’re so fucking sure of yourself.” Devil released me, and I spun to face him.

“Come with me, Joe.”

“You really thought I’d just let you shove me into your car?”

Devil chewed his lower lip, looking uncharacteristically uncertain. “I… um… I thought…”

“You did, didn’t you?”

“I’ve got a surprise for you. Let me show it to you.”

I scowled at him. “What kind of surprise?”

“I promise you’ll like it.”

I probably would because despite what he said, it was probably sex related. “You would say that no matter what it was because you want me to come with you.”

“Yeah, but what am I supposed to say? You really will like it.”

“How long is this going to take?”

Devil tilted his head as if considering.

“I need to get back here. I appreciate you sending Six, but—”

Devil shook his head. “You’re done with this. You’re obsessing. You’re not sleeping. You’re working way too much, and you need a break.”

“Devil, this is not—”

“Get in the car.”

“You’re back to ordering me around?”

“You knew what you were getting into when you married me.”

“Jesus fucking Christ! Can’t you understand how—”

He gripped my chin, forcing me to look at him. “I understand how important you are. I understand how much I love you. I understand you’re running yourself into the ground, and I understand I need more time with you. Give me this. Come with me.”

I stayed silent for a few moments as too many feelings warred inside me. Finally, I nodded. “I’ll go with you, but we’re going to discuss this. This idea that you get to tell me what I can and can’t investigate… That’s not how this works.”

“You married a Marchesi. You had to know that’s how it was going to be.”

“You married a cop who could’ve put your ass in jail. You knew I was going to fight back.”

He grinned. “Yeah, it’s one of my favorite things.”

He picked up my gun from where it had landed on the ground, then opened the passenger door for me, and I climbed in. As soon as he shut the door, he hit the button on his key fob to lock it. That pissed me off, so I reach for the handle. The door wouldn’t open. I pressed the button to unlock it, but it didn’t work.

When he opened the driver’s door, I snarled at him. “How the fuck did you—”

“Do you like that feature? It’s a little something extra Beau added for me. It’s like child locks but on all the doors.”

“You fucking locked me in the car.”

He shrugged. “I had to be sure you weren’t psyching me out again.”

I wanted to be angry, but I would likely have done the same thing in his position. “It would probably be better if we trusted each other more.”

He took my hand, and his eyes seemed to bore into mine. “I do trust you, Joe. I trust you with my life. I trust you with my family’s lives. I trust you with things I’ve never told anyone.”

“But you don’t trust me not to run.”

He looked away. “Not many people have stuck by me.”

“Are you actually worried I would run, like, for good? Because you’re fucking crazy if so. I am in this forever. I fucking married you, but even if I hadn’t, you’re mine for life, Devil. You’re stuck with me. I’m just not going to let you dictate every move I make.”
