Garrett peered at the screen, and Kate reached for his hand and squeezed, suddenly extremely excited. He squeezed back even harder, and smiled down at the screen.

“That noise you hear is the heartbeat,” the doctor explained.

They were both silent as they registered this. Then the doctor took some measurements, and estimated the date of conception to be...of course, the night she accosted Garrett in his bedroom when he was sick.

“Thank God for strep,” he said to himself, and his eyes glittered when he looked at her, as though that was the best thing that could have ever happened to him.

Sharing this with him was incredible. Irrevocable. She could feel the connection as they watched their child on that screen together.

The doctor gave them the estimated delivery date. “So we will be seeing you in two months to find out what you’re having.”

“Do we really want to know?” Kate asked Garrett.

“Hell, yes, we do.”

She smiled and nodded.

The doctor slapped the folder shut. “In the meantime, everything looks fine, Mr. and Mrs. Devaney. You have yourselves a good rest of the day.”

“It’s Gage.”

The doctor turned to Garrett. “Oh?” He quickly checked his folder, flustered and confused.

“I filled my name in as Devaney,” Kate whispered to Garrett as she wiped the gel off her stomach. His eyes homed in on her bare skin like he wanted to lick the gel up and bury his face in her belly button.

“You’re a Gage, too, starting tomorrow,” he said flatly.

She rolled her eyes. “Of course I am. I just felt odd using the name before we go to city hall and church.”

He helped her down from the examining table and kissed her softly but quickly. “You’ve always been a Gage, Kate. You’ve been mine from the start. I didn’t need to sleep with you to show you that.”

“Maybe you did.” She smirked, patting her stomach, and he laughed.

Outside the clinic, he pulled her up against him when they got to his car. “Thank you, Freckles.”

“For what?”

“For that night you spent in my arms,” he whispered, framing her face in his hands and kissing her. “For agreeing to spend a lifetime of nights with me.”

“No, Garrett,” she said, cupping his face right back. “Thank you for asking.”
