“Last night didn’t feel like a waste of time. It felt incredible.” He said.

I nodded. “It really did. Now, is there a chance of more pancakes? I’m still hungry.”

By early evening I was recovered enough to go back to the hotel. I opened my emails and found one from Morgan.

Do you think you might have a story for next week? I’m just organizing things.

Shit. I’d told her I was almost there with the story. Now I needed more time.

I quickly typed a message back.

Things didn’t go as expected so I probably need a couple more weeks. I’ll be in touch as soon as I can. Nothing to be alarmed about, but I want my story to be the best it can be!

S

It was the first time I’d lied to my boss. I laid back on my bed, my head on my pillows and I stared at the ceiling.

What a mess. My story was finished apart from digging up any further dirt on Smith’s surrogate mother, but I didn’t want it to stop. I already craved the touch of all four of them. Men I couldn’t keep fucking while I was human.

It was then I realized that I believed them. I believed that they were vampires. Not that it was something like out of Twilight but as they’d described it, just a slight difference where they needed blood to survive in a different way to humans. It wasn’t so hard to believe. Science had lots of things that were hard to explain and understand. This was just another.

So I needed to buy a little time. To see where things went with the guys and to decide once and for all whether to sell them over for my career. Or end my career for them.

My cell beeped and Flynn’s name appeared. I clicked on the message.

Flynn: You’re invited for lunch on Sunday at mine. Our families are coming over and they’d like to meet you.

Holy crap! I was petrified at meeting their parents yet at the same time my heart beat faster at the thought of digging around in the family history, particularly in connection to Smith.

This weekend was going to be pivotal in my decision, I knew it. I could feel it in my bones.

If only I’d known how it would threaten to splinter everything apart.

Chapter Twenty-three

Morgan

I sat back and read Serena’s response with interest. She needed more time? I didn’t see how. I knew from Linda, who’d found out from Lily, that she’d slept with them all. That they thought she could possibly be the one. They didn’t want to scare her and so they’d arranged a family dinner, for the parents to meet her and see what they thought to their choice.

I rang through to my assistant. “Can you arrange a flight for me to Malibu. I need to arrive Saturday.”

Of course I might not need to go there at all. It would depend on what happened next. I emailed Ted at the Malibu Dream.

Morgan: It’s time. Let Smith know her references don’t check out.

The next challenge was underway.

Chapter Twenty-four

Smith

“Her references are fake? You sure about that?”

“Completely sure.”

“So what will you do?”

“I’ll call her into my office today and ask her to explain.”
