My rational mind couldn’t compute such a thought and shut down and made me sleep.

Chapter Twenty-one

Smith

Flynn and I followed Carter to Surfrider beach via his house and talked about the evening.

“That was beyond what I could have imagined.” I said. “She’s the one.”

“I agree,” Flynn said. I saw Carter nod.

“So we just have to ask Jayden but I can’t see him saying no. So then what?”

“We continue to date Serena until she agrees to being turned. Then we can look for a place of our own.”

“I’m going to check in with my mother." Flynn said. "Tell her we found someone. We might need a woman’s expertise in talking to Serena about being turned.”

“She has to meet all of our parents anyway.” I said. “That’s how it goes.”

“So, let's have a family dinner on Sunday.” Flynn said. “You can all come around to mine.” He looked from one to the other of us. “But don’t mention to Serena about it being how we do things when we want to bring someone into the nest. Keep it as just something that happens from time to time anyway. No big deal.”

We nodded, but we knew it was a big deal. A very big deal.

Chapter Twenty-two

Serena

I slept until late afternoon. When I eventually got out of bed I was ravenous. I opened a drawer and found one of Jayden’s large tees and pulled it over my head. It ended mid-thigh. I padded downstairs to find him sat on the patio at the table where we’d dined last night.

“Hey. How are you feeling?” He asked.

“I’m okay now, apart from being famished.”

Jayden smiled. “Well, it just so happens that I’m great in the kitchen as well as in the sack, so sit down, sugar, and I’ll make you pancakes.

He brought me pancakes, bacon, maple syrup, a pot of coffee and a large glass of orange juice. I fed like I’d not eaten for years.

When I’d finished I let out a satisfied sigh and sat back in the chair patting my stomach while the sun’s rays beat down on me. The sound of the surf was so relaxing. I took a large pull on my OJ and then put the glass back down before running my hands through my hair.

“So was it just me or was last night something else?”

“Last night was incredible.” Jayden smiled as his eyes flickered in recollection. “But I was concerned this morning at how tired you were. We can’t do this more than once a week. Your body isn’t built for it.” He scowled. “An oversight we should have thought of before.”

“And the only way for me to be an equal partner to you all is for me to be turned? What does that entail?” I’d watched programs on the television and being drained to the point of death and waking up in a coffin newly undead didn’t appeal.

“You’d be admitted to one of our medical facilities. There they would run a transfusion of vampire blood and give you medication to stop you from rejecting it. Over the next couple of days your own blood would be phased out. At that point you’d feel like you had flu for a couple more days. Then you’d slowly be introduced to feeding.”

“Would I get the thirst and go on a mad killing rampage.”

He laughed. “No. That’s not who we are.

It’s just an anomaly. You survive your way and we do ours. We need blood to live. We have it delivered just like people do their groceries. It’s not a big deal.”

“It is to me.” I looked down at the table.

“Yes, I understand that. I was born this way and don’t know any different. There’s no rush. We just need to be gentle with you in the meantime. We only just all started dating, you don’t need to make a huge commitment right now.”

“I know.” I said. “But I need to consider this, or I’m wasting all of your time.”
