“Well, you’re definitely not that cute, shy boy I had a crush on anymore.”

“You had a crush on me?” I asked, astounded by her words.

“You didn’t know?”

“No, and if I did it’s not like I would have done anything back then. But things change and so do people,” I said, before I crushed her to me, wrapping my arms around her frame before I crushed my lips to hers again.

“Am I dreaming?” She whispered against my lips.

“God, I hope not. This would be the worst dream to wake up from,” I said, as my hand trailed up and down her thigh, my fingers dancing around the edges of her skirt.

“Well, I have to admit, you are definitely way more forward.”

“When a man loses something valuable he is not as passive when he gets that second chance.”

“I wonder how many women you’ve practiced those lines on?” She asked, her hands forming a circle around my neck, before her fingers laced into my hair, body soft and melding deeper into mine.

“None. I’ve never even kissed anyone until now,” I blurted, and then wanted to kick my own ass.

She pulled back from me, eyes squinting with a look of suspicion. “I guess over the years you’ve also learned to lie through your teeth.”

“I’m not lying. You’re really hard for any girl to measure up to. I never met anyone that made me feel the way you did. If I couldn’t have that feeling, I didn’t want anything. So I drove myself into helping people. You left a lasting impression, Jade.”

Chapter 4

Jade

His words washed over me like a bucket of ice. I sat there, frozen, my hands stopped roaming the ridges of his bulging, defined muscles. Maverick was always adorable when we were kids, but now… now he was all man. All hard, strong, rugged and gorgeous. Looking at Maverick now, I would think I was looking at the sexy plumber in a porno made strictly for women. He was the perfect specimen of masculinity. But hearing that this guy before me now had never really been with another woman was complete bullshit. No way a guy that looked like a walking Herculean God didn’t have all the girls throwing themselves at him.

“What’s wrong?”

“I’m a pretty intelligent woman. You sitting there trying to tell me that you’re some sort of Virgin Mary is a bit preposterous. I wasn’t born yesterday,” I said, rising slowly and straightening my skirt as soon as I had a good hold on my footing. Maverick shot up right after me. His body was substantially larger than mine, both in bulk and in height. Maverick was like a brick wall, a very tall brick wall.

He closed the gap between us, I could feel his hard chest pushing up against mine. My breath started hitching and I could feel the heat elevated in the small space and the moisture pooling in my panties. The attraction I felt was undeniable, and if I was being honest with myself I didn’t want to deny any of it. I didn’t really care that he could have been lying. I wanted him to take me right then and there, push me against the wall, rip my skirt off me and pound me so hard that I forgot my name. But I knew that having sex with the only guy I’d ever wanted wasn’t going to end well for me, especially if he was a typical dog, saying what he had to in order to get what he wanted. I would have caught feelings and then spent weeks on my best friend’s bed, drowning my tears with multiple pints of chocolate ice cream. I’d worked way too hard to let some guy come blaring into my life, making me forget my goals by getting lost in him.

“I’m not lying, Jade. I have no reason to,” he whispered, taking me out of my own thoughts. His hand pushed my hair out of my face, and as the tips of his fingers brushed against my skin I felt my resolve melt into a puddle of water on the floor. I hated that he had this kind of effect on me. But it wasn’t just the fact that he was so good looking. More than that, it was the fact that he was the shy kid that always made me smile. He still had the same sharp tongue that he had back then, except now he was way more vocal than he’d ever been before.

His words were slow and clear, almost as if he was making sure that I didn’t miss their meaning. He moved his hands slowly until he was holding my head in them. He brought his head down, touching his forehead to my own.

“Nine years is a long time. But for you, I would wait forever.”

“Why didn’t you ever say anything?”
