“Go.” He eased back into the room and pinned me with a stare. “When?”
Silence.
“Okay, when’s he being questioned?” Marshal asked.
My gut dropped. Had they gotten Nicco?
“Yeah. Thanks.” He tapped his phone. “Okay, maybe no dinner after all.”
“What?” Hunter asked. “They get Nicco?”
“Got Walker in for questioning.”
“What? How?” I yelled. Nobody brought Walker in. Nobody!
“Camera caught him coming out of the alley your brother was found in.”
“Shit yeah!” Hunter clapped his hands. “We got ’em.”
“Just coming out of the alley?”
“Angles are too sharp. The video didn’t show anything from the alley. Only the entrance.” He let out a sigh. “But he was carrying a crowbar.”
“Walker’s weapon of choice,” I said.
“You…know this?” Marshal lifted an eyebrow.
“I…used to run with him.”
“What?” Marshal asked, his voice tense. He looked at Hunter. “You never said anything.”
“Not my story to tell.” Hunter shrugged. “You ready to talk, Drey?”
“I’ll end up like Damon if I do. What good would I be to Sarah like that?” It was true, too. If Walker thought for a second I said anything, he’d rain hell on me. Even more than he already had.
“What about Mom? Can you connect him to that?”
“Not that I know of. It’s a local thing at this point. Drug stings and undercover BS going on. Tough to get any information. But they know about the connection. What I hear is that your mom died, Damon went after Walker, blaming him.”
“He was drawing me out. Think about it. Draw me out, Sarah’s with me. Walker knew all along who Sarah was. Exactly how to get to her. Whether or not he intended my mom to die, which he probably did, knowing Damon would freak. Fucker planned all this.”
Marshal gave me a long, hard look. “You don’t have a tat, but your brother does.”
“Got out before. So, I wasn’t privy to much, since I wasn’t jumped in. I was around enough to see some things. But you know how they feel about loyalty and secrecy, so you can understand my hesitance.”
“I can.” Marshal glanced at Hunter, then me. “They’re going to question him if you want to listen in.”
“I can’t go to the police station when he’s there.”
“True,” Hunter said. “Through the back?”
“Eyes everywhere.”
“Okay. I’ll let you know how it turns out.”
“I’ll be there,” Hunter said. “Andaccidentallykeep my phone on speaker, so charge your battery.”
That’d work. I could listen on my ride up to get Sarah. Because I was going to go find my fiancée, marry her, then kill Nicco.
