Might need to load up on the chocolate and ice cream, too, because the way my mood was raging over the fact that I had to leave Drey, I’d need it.

Chapter Forty-Two

Drey

“Okay,Damon.Enoughscrewingaround, man. Wake up!” I said, for the eighth straight morning. Dumb kid wasn’t budging.

He’d crashed three more times, and the docs were saying it was a miracle he was still hanging on. But now he was in a coma.

Damn coma!

“Hey man,” Hunter said as he came in with a bag of food. “Burgers okay?”

“Yeah. Thanks.” I accepted his offering.

“Got some weird looks asking for burgers and fries at ten in the morning.”

I dug in without another word. I was starving and very thankful for the handout. Since I’d missed so much work, I was a hair’s breadth from losing my apartment.

“Look man. We’ll find her.”

“And Nicco. Yeah, that’s what you’ve been telling me every day for eight days, man.”

“I know. Marshal said they might have found something. Cameras picked Sarah up walking near a gas station with a big green frog.”

“What?” I hopped up. “When?”

“Video was dated the night she bolted.”

“Which gas station? Mine? Or—”

“On Midland Street. There’s a bus station there, too. They’re analyzing the video of the buses leaving that time of night on that day.”

A rush of hope flared. “She wouldn’t take a bus, though, would she? That leaves a trail.”

“Cash, remember?”

“They have to get a name, though, don’t they?”

“Sure. Can’t expect to see hers. But if Marshal can get names, maybe we’ll recognize something?”

“Hell yeah. I want to see that list.” I might have an idea of a name she might choose, considering her favorite movies wereResident Evil, but I kept my mouth shut. I trusted no one. Well, Hunter, but if he knew I was going to bolt as soon as I had a hint of where she might be, he’d freak on me. And that guy could hold me back, too, like the mountain he was.

“Marshal said he’d stop by this morning with whatever he had on the case.”

“He’s assigned to it?”

“They called an all-hands-on-deck for this guy.”

“Hunter, she deserves this, man. Deserves to be truly free of this ass wanker.”

“I know. Trust me, I know, man.” He slapped my shoulder.

“I know you do. So you understand what I’ll do if I have to, you know that, right?”

“Hell, I’ll help you. That fucker destroyed Sarah. And probably hundreds of other girls. It’s shit like that that ruins lives. My Lina…” Hunter shook his head. “She’s a mess over Sarah’s disappearance. And over everything she’s had to deal with.”

“Lizzie okay?”
