“What?”
“I like this.” I kissed the corner of her mouth to get a hint of cheesecake on her lip.
“Me too.” She let out a long sigh and settled against me. “I’m so full…”
“That’s okay, we’re going to go for a drive in a minute, so we’ll have time to let things settle.”
“Should I bother asking where we’re going?”
“Nope.” I kissed the top of her head. Sure was fun planning the surprise that would hopefully change both of our lives. I knew it would, I…well, the ring in my pocket sure was burning a hole. I wanted to give it to her right now, but there was still part of the surprise left to play out.
“Best Valentine’s Day ever.”
“Good. The first of many together.”
“This is really happening, isn’t it?”
“It is.”
“Me and you. Together.” She grinned, but there was a distance in her eyes that I didn’t like.
“What?”
“Nothing. It’s…difficult to believe. I mean, I’m here. I’m touching you. And…I know this is real, but…”
“Feels like something’s going to ruin it?”
“Exactly. You get that, too?”
“A little. But, I think everyone worries a little when things are going well. Like when is the rug going to get ripped out from beneath.”
“Exactly! I thought I was the only one who thought that.”
“You’re not alone, Sarah. You’ve had a shitty hand dealt to you for a long time. But things are different now.”
“I’ve got you,” she whispered and pushed up to kiss my neck. “I’ve got you.”
“All of me, Sarah.”
“Notall, but most.” She settled back down.
“We’ll have all of each other. No doubts.”
She sighed her answer and rested her hand on my thigh.
“You believe that, right?”
She nodded.
“Say it.”
“We’ll have all of each other.” She gulped. “Just feels so far away. You know? Do all relationships move this slowly?”
“Slowly, huh? Bored of me already?”
“So not what I meant.” She squeezed my thigh. “I want all of you right now.”
If that didn’t tighten my body even more, nothing would. No doubt I could pick her up, walk her into a bathroom, and she’d have sex with me right now.
