I clenched my jaw so hard my temples instantly ached. This kid didn’t know shit about anything. “Why are you here?”

He stood, and I tensed. “I don’t know.”

That might be a good thing.

“I…can you check on her?”

“Why don’t you?”

“Walker doesn’t want me in the hospital.”

“Right, he’s the boss of you now, huh? Tells you where to go, when to go, what to do…”

“I’m not even supposed to be with you. Told me to sever all contact.”

“Because I left him. He afraid I might convince you?”

The hardness in his eyes made him nearly unrecognizable. He once had lots of life in those eyes, despite being raised by me, totally poor and alone. We used to have fun. Rely on each other.

And I had to go and ruin that by running with Walker and his thugs.

“I… I think it’s something more, Drey. I—” He stepped to the door.

“What?”

“Go check on Mom.”

“Fine. If you tell me what’s going on.”

“Your girl. Who is she, Drey?”

Shit. “I don’t have a girl.”

“I—Walker—knows you do.”

“If I did?”

“Drey. You know how dangerous he is.”

“What’s that got to do with anything? Let alone a girl he thinks I have. I know lots of chicks.” My palms went sweaty, totally not liking the worry lines creasing my brother’s forehead.

“Who is she, Drey?”

“Just a girl who works at a bar.” I stepped forward, my fists tight and ready to pound if he didn’t start talking soon.

“Where’d she come from?”

“Damon. What?” I yelled, stepping toward him.

He backed up, his eyes wide, the fire sparking to life in them. Yeah, I must look as mad as I felt.

“Walker knows her. Or, knows of her. She…came from Mexico. I didn’t hear everything, but…was she doing drugs down there or something? Part of Walker’s connections?”

“No. Why does he think that?”

Damon shrugged. “Said she looked familiar. He said…he never forgets eyes.”

I remembered that from when I used to run with him. He didn’t forget a face. Had to have a good memory to stay out of trouble, I guess. “What’s going down?”
