Which meant…Drey was in a gang?

Chapter Thirteen

Drey

Itwasfinallystartingto cool down enough that I didn’t break out in a sweat right when I walked out the door.

It was cool, the sky was clear, and the streets empty. All the Halloween tricksters had tucked themselves into their homes finally. What a long night of cleaning the floor with drunks.

“So…” Sarah said from beside me. “He’s your brother?”

Damn. I was hoping she wouldn’t bring that up. Though it was a stupid hope. I was still reeling from seeing Damon in the bar. Not to mention the mark of The Southies on his wrist.

He’d been successfully jumped in. Done and sealed.Shit.

“Drey?”

“Younger brother. Screwed up. And now…in a gang.”

“What’d he want with you?”

“More than likely to show me it was done. You see how he flaunted his wrist?”

“Did catch that. What he said…were you-er-are you in a gang?”

“Hell no. I mean, to thearepart.”

“So you were, then?”

“Yeah.” I felt my shoulders slouch.

So not a great time in my life at all. Thank God for Bill’s help. Too bad I couldn’t help Damon like Bill had helped me. Talk about an epic failure.

“The one-word answers are not that endearing, Drey.” She elbowed me.

“It’s Halloween, don’t want to talk about that shit.”

“There’s never a good time to talk aboutshit, sometimes you just have to go with it.”

“Why do you want to know?”

“Curious.”

“Not good enough.” Our turn was coming up. We were way too close to her place, I didn’t want to drop her off yet, but everything was closed. No place to go hang…

“I really am curious. I…want to know more about you,” she said.

“I’ve shared enough. I’m thinking it’s your turn.”

“Jerk.”

“Hey. Two-way street, girl.”

“That’s a new concept for me.”

“Meaning.”

She was quiet for a long time, and I thought she was going to totally bail on the whole talking thing when she finally spoke.
