My stomach tightened with excitement. Nothing like following to learn a little more about him. He’d asked me three times for a coffee date and I’d refused. I hated seeing the hurt in his eyes, but it was better if we didn’t.
So why am I following him?
I already knew why I was following Drey. I was totally into him. Had been for a while, just really, really trying to avoid it. Drown it out with…everything else.
Though since his declaration I couldn’t hook up with anyone. I could have, but I…couldn’t.
Didn’t feel right with him watching me so closely, and I respected the guy. Couldn’t shit on that. I was a piece of trash person, but I had a little soul left.
Nicco and the other bastards hadn’t stoleneverypart of it.
Drey picked up his pace so I ditched my drink in a trash bin and followed, the rush of the chase prickling my skin, despite the oppressive heat of the day.
One more turn to the right, and I followed, only to see him hustle to the main entrance of County Hospital. Was he hurting? Having problems with his stitches? He’d not let on during his last shift. He actually had looked really strong…and fit. And sexy. And…
The automatic doors opened, and he hurried in. I checked my phone, and it was three o’clock. Maybe he was late for an appointment?
I hurried in and paused inside when I didn’t see him. The hospital was only one floor, but it was spread out a lot. Where did he go?
I went to the information desk and asked, “Excuse me, did you just see a guy come in? He’s about six feet tall—”
“Drey?”
“Um, yeah. Drey. You know him?”
“Oh sure.” She pointed up the hall. “Maternity ward.”
“Excuse me?”
“You here to volunteer with him?”
“Ahhh, yeah. Volunteering.” Oh, Ihadto see this. I immediately envisioned him in a candy striper outfit for some sick reason.
I hustled through the swinging doors and skidded to a stop at the wailing I heard. Little babies crying, all over the place.
“Hey, you can’t be in here,” someone called out from the side.
“Sorry?”
“Restricted area here. You—”
“I’m looking for Drey.”
The woman’s face softened. “You’re with Drey?”
“Yep.” Holy cow, everyone here knew him? And appeared to totally love him! “Um, where’d he go?”
She pointed in my direction. “Behind you.”
I turned and faced a glass window. Inside there were four tiny cribs. Drey, dressed in a paper gown of some sort, picked up the tiniest baby I’d ever seen.
But I sure heard him.
To my left there was another room filled with babies. Pink blankets.
Okay, things were starting to click…
Despite his size, Drey gently picked up the tiny bundle. The kid kept screaming at the top of his lungs and squirming against his blankets. I never knew babies could be so loud.
