The call connected, and I slid the phone back in my pocket. Hopefully that’d be enough to hear.

“How’d you find me here in Rena? It’s a Podunk town just shy of the Canadian border.”

“A frog? How obvious was that? And like I said. I own you. I can find you anywhere.”

“I won’t go back to that Mexican sex slave pit you have. I won’t. You hear me?”

He huffed. “You think that’s my only place? You have no clue, Rachel, no clue.” He clutched my throat so fast and so hard I had to cough. “The cold seems to suit you better, anyway.”

If my directions were right, we were heading north. “Wait, Canada? You have a place in Canada?”

“The lakes make it a little easier to sneak my cargo around.” That damned mustache, just a tiny dusting of hair, made him look like the horrible pimp that he was.

The disgusting pig who’d taken advantage of me in so many ways I couldn’t begin to think about them. It’d throw me into a catatonic state, and I needed to think.

“How are you getting me across the border? I won’t stay calm. So help me, I’ll scream bloody murder.”

“I think I like the docile, obedient girl you once were when I bought you from that druggie mother of yours. Though I think I got the best deal between us both. A handful of drugs and a month’s rent. Did I ever tell you that?” He licked my neck. “She sold you to me for less than a thousand dollars. That’s all she thought of you, Rachel. And yes, your name is Rachel. That’s the name youwillanswer to.”

“Never.” I moved to headbutt him, but he ducked out of my reach. “You willnevertouch me again, you sack of shit. I’m Drey’s, and he’s the only one who will be touching me. His wife!”

“Marriage. Just a piece of paper, Rachel. And yours isn’t valid because you’re married to me.”

“No!” I yelled.

“Not only did I purchase you, but on paper I am your husband,” Nicco said. “How do you think Drey will react when he finds out your marriage to him isn’t legal? And then how do you think he’ll react to the fact that you killed his brother? Along with his best friend and his wife, and that precious little Lizzie? You think thatifyou ever see Drey again he’ll let those sins go unpunished?”

The breath left me with such force I got lightheaded and dizzy. “Married?”

“I’ve got the certificate to prove it right here. So when you’re sleeping as we cross the border, they won’t bother you. And I’m a big tipper.”

I almost puked. My marriage to Drey wasn’t legal? I was…married to Nicco? How could I not remember that? Then again, he’d had me stoned quite a bit to keep me complacent.

Tears stung my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. I refused to let him win. “I’m Sarah Meyers. Wife of Drey Meyers. No one else. I don’t give a flying fuck what paperwork you have. Or what you do to me. I willneverbe your wife.” Only Drey. Only Drey.

He squeezed my arm to the point of pain. “You will do exactly as I say from this day forward. You have nothing now. Nothing but me. No husband, no friends, no…nothing! And it’s your fault they’re all dead. Your fault for thinking you could get away from me. They were dead the minute they saw you. This is on you, Rachel. On you.”

My stomach clenched as the guilt swarmed through. The anger. The pain. I had caused this, hadn’t I? Was Drey even still alive? He’d been hit so hard. And that guy, the one he’d knocked out, was still there. What if he’d awakened and hurt him?

I yanked the door handle, hoping against hope that the ten times before had been a fluke that it didn’t open. Just open. We were going fast enough that I could jump and end this. Be done.

It didn’t.

“Just like it was your fault Alissa died when you tried to escape. Anyone you lock gazes with, plead for help, anything…they will die.”

Chapter Forty-Nine

Drey

“How’dyoufindme?”I asked Marshal, resting back in the car seat, holding ice to the back of my throbbing head.

“Are you kidding? You think I didn’t notice your face when you read the list of names I showed you in Damon’s room? I started tracking you the second I left the hospital.”

Fucking hell. My head hurt. Sarah was gone. I was lucky to be alive.

“Lucky your girl is quick on her feet. She grabbed your phone. We have eyes on her.”

“How far?” I sat up. Six dark cars followed us, and we were flying up a snow-packed single lane road. “And why the hell are we going north?”
