“I don’t get it. How are you getting married?” Hunter asked in confusion.

“Like I said, the opportunity presented itself to me,” I replied. “It happened last month.”

I had just concluded a meeting with the board when she came in.

“My, what a lovely place. I really love what you've done with the place,” she praised.

I recognized her as one of the shareholders of our company. I hadn't met her in person but she was quite famous. She wasn’t the largest shareholder, but she had quite the influence. My father often told Nick and me to be on our best behavior if we ever came across her.

“Well, it is my father’s legacy we’re talking about. I had to ensure that it doesn’t pale compared to how he left it,” I replied.

After Nick’s disposal, I gave the company a makeover. I had an unveiling event for the whole thing, but it seemed that the lady was the only one who didn’t attend amongst the shareholders.

“Eh? Not bad, not bad,” she said as she inspected the board room. “Did you know your father, and I were once lovers?”

That was completely random.

“Uh, no, I wasn’t aware of that, ma’am,” I chuckled nervously.

“We really were,” she said with a pouting face and even crossed her arms. “He was the sweetest and had a bright dream.”

“If things were that good, then why didn’t you two end up together?” I couldn’t contain my curiosity.

“Well, he was competing with my husband for my hand in marriage, and let’s just say my husband won,” she said with a giggle. She squealed as she held her cheeks. “I enjoyed watching the two of them fight over who would have my attention.”

“Was he really your lover, then?” I asked. “It seemed to me that you just toyed with him.”

“Oh, that’s far from it,” she shook her head. “If there’s anything I would mention about him, it was his lovemaking skills. That man knew how to make a woman provide streams from between her legs.”

Okay, the conversation was a little weird…no, a lot weird.

“I envy your mother,” she sighed. “Speaking of which, where is she? Can’t seem to find her anywhere.”

“Well, she’s no longer with us,” I replied.

“She died? And no one told me?” she asked in a concerned tone. “Ah, so this would be the third funeral your family has had, and I was absent. Some shareholder slash friend I am.”

“No, I didn’t mean she was dead,” I corrected. “What I meant to say is, she no longer has any attachment to Parker Corp.”

“Strange of her to disappear like that,” she said. “Do you know why she left?”

“Well, we pinned it on the fact that she had lost her son, my brother Nick,” I replied.

“How strange,” she said. “She still has you, or is this favoritism at play, or she just wants space?” She mused. “Oh well, I think it’s tough on you to be left behind by everyone in your family.”

For some odd reason, her words had a sort of venom to them. It was almost like she intended to hurt me with them.

But there was no malice on her face, no mischievousness, just a simple smile that screamed childlike innocence. To be honest, it was a little creepy.

“Sorry, ma’am, but how may I help you?” I said.

“Eh? Well, could you please call me lady?” she said as she played with her thumbs.

Are you kidding me? This woman was obviously older than me, but she didn’t look older than 30. I bet it was surgery. Not only that, she didn’t act uptight or anything; she was like a teenager, except she was a little more annoying.

“I see. No problem, lady,” I said. “So, my dear lady, how may I be of service?”
