Across the street is their building, and they are on the fourth floor. Their windows face this side, so we stand back and look for a second.
“Do you see—” I start to ask just as Meadow appears in the window.
“What’s she holding?” Mace asks and I take out my phone.
After I snap a quick picture, I hold it out for us to look at and zoom in. “Is that a kitten?”
“Looks like it,” he agrees and then looks up at the window where Briar has joined Meadow. “You don’t think that the guy they were talking about was a cat, do you?”
“No way,” I say, and then I see Briar is holding two furry things also. “Wait, did they just—”
“Make us look like idiots?” Mace is already nodding. “Let’s go home.”
“Monday can’t come soon enough,” I say as I shove my hands in my pockets and stalk down the street beside my twin.
