“I won’t be going back for a couple of days, but I promise that when I get back into town, you will be the first person I come to see.”
As we finished eating, I knew it was time for me to leave. I didn’t want to go, but I had to work tomorrow. The doubts still lingered from yesterday.
“My driver will take you to the plane. Have a safe flight back. Text me when you land.”
“Will do. Thanks for this. It was nice to get away for a little while.”
I got in the car, and we drove to the plane. The first thing I requested once on the plane was vodka. I just wanted to enjoy the flight back home.
I heard my phone ring.
“Is this Ella?” a woman asked.
“Yes, who is this?”
“This is Alexander’s mother. I wanted to check in with you about my offer again. See if you have changed your mind.”
“No, I haven’t,” I scoffed at her.
“Stop fighting it. I know all you want is his money. Why are you playing games? Just take the money. I know you need it.”
She was right. I wasn’t exactly doing the best financially right now. I could use the money, but I was not taking it. Not in a million years.
“Is this what his world is going to be like? Everything revolves around money?”
“Yes, darling. He is a rich man. He makes more in a day than you do in three months.”
“I don’t want his money or your money. Just leave me alone.”
“Don’t lie to me. I know plenty of women like you. You just want my son for his money. You aren’t going to get it. Just take the damn money.”
“I’m not taking the money. Don’t call me again.”
That woman had really irritated me. I understood her wanting to be cautious, but to do this? It was unacceptable and uncalled for.
Did I know this had been coming? Getting into a relationship with a rich man was bound to pose some issues. I just didn’t think I could deal with it. I didn’t deserve to be treated this way.If our lives were going to be all about money all the time, then forget it. I was just not cut out to be in his world. I couldn’t keep up with his lifestyle.
I didn’t want to end it with him, but I couldn’t go through life dealing with that woman. Would she ever stop accusing me or trying to bribe me? Probably not! Why should I subject myself to that kind of treatment? I shouldn’t. I took a deep breath, knowing I was about to do something huge.
Deep down, I did have a feeling something was going to bring this relationship down, but I didn’t know it would be his own mother.
When I touched down, my hands were shaking from the flight and the nervousness of the situation, but I texted Alexander.
Me: I can’t do this anymore. Your life is so complicated, and I don’t think I can keep up. I’m sorry, it’s for the best. You deserve so much better than me anyway. You will find a girl who fits into your world better than me.
Chapter Nineteen
ALEXANDER
My heart sank as I read the message. What happened? We just had a wonderful weekend together. Nothing seemed to be wrong. Now all of a sudden, she doesn’t want to be with me?
I knew I shouldn’t have done this. I scared her away because I brought her here and showed her how I lived. I couldn’t lose her. She was the only thing I could look forward to every day. I didn’t want to go back to just working all the time. It made everything worth it when I had someone to spend time with when I was off. I tried to call her, but she didn’t answer.
“What’s wrong?” Shawn asked me.
“Ella, she broke up with me.”
“Wait, why? I thought she just met your parents?”
