I stand. “Is Cassandra okay? Did she get hurt? Why didn’t anyone contact me?”
Ashlyn waves away my concern. “She’s fine. Elizabeth has a concussion and Beckett broke his foot, but Cassandra wasn’t injured.”
“What the hell happened? How did Elizabeth get a concussion?”
“You’ll have to ask Cassandra.” She winks.
“Let me guess. You joined the gossip gals.”
She sticks out her bottom lip and pouts. “No, they won’t let me. They have a strict age requirement. It’s ageism, but Lyric won’t let me file a complaint with the police. He said it’s a ‘civil matter’. As if anything the gossip gals do is civil.”
Rowan blows out a breath. “Aren’t you busy enough with your audiobook narrating, managing the recording studio, and taking care of our baby?”
“I’m wonder woman. I can do it all.”
The baby monitor crackles.
“Patience is probably hungry.” Ashlyn grunts as she stands. “Told you I’m Wonder Woman.”
“I should probably get going,” I say as soon as she’s out of hearing range.
Rowan smirks. “Say hi to Cassandra from me.”
I don’t bother to deny it. He’s my big brother. He knows when I’m lying. And I would be lying. I haven’t seen Cassie since she stopped Beckett from fighting with me. I know she’s still mad, but I don’t care. I’m done waiting for her to get over it.
“She’s living in Lilac’s old apartment,” he hollers as I walk out the door.
I check the time. It’s nearly five. Cassie won’t be at home. She’ll be at work.
When I enterElectric Vibes, the place is deserted except for Cassandra and Lennon stocking bottles of liquor behind the bar.
“How can I…” Cassie cuts herself off when she realizes it’s me. “What do you want?”
I stuff my hands in my pockets. “Can we talk?”
“Is your name still Cedar?”
I sigh. “Yes.”
“I’m busy.”
Lennon grunts. “You’re on break. Use my office.”
Cassie throws her towel on the bar and marches toward the hallway. Before I can follow her, Lennon stops me.
“You better treat her right, Cedar.”
I hold up my hands. “I never meant to lie to her.”
He grunts. “I know what you were doing. Time to come clean.”
How could he possibly know?
“I won’t hurt her again.”
He chuckles. “Yeah, you will. You’re human. You’ll mess up again.”
How reassuring. I nod to him before following Cassie down the hallway to the office. A three-legged dog meets me at the door.
