“Fuck that,” Trey growled, stalking to the door and ripping it open without hesitation.
He stepped inside, not the slightest bit wary, and I followed him in to find my trailer trashed.
“Oh, Lord,” I whispered, snapping a hand over my mouth as I took in the broken...everything.
Everything I owned, everything I couldn’t replace because I couldn’t afford anything special right now. Caleb paid me well, but I’d been trying to save so I could get a little house closer to work and Trey and…
“Don’t.” Trey groaned, coming back out of my room to hug me, his chest rumbling with growls of fury. “Don’t let this scare you. We’re going to pack your stuff and leave, and I’ll get some of the guys out here. We do printing and crime scene now, and with the database growing, we will get answers.”
“There’s no scent.” I pointed out.
“Nope, which means you’re not staying here alone because whoever was here knows how to cover his scent. Come on.” Trey snarled, shoving me into my bedroom to pack while he stalked the trailer and looked around.
I watched him for a minute and realized that despite the suave suit, easy-going attitude, and general nonchalance, Trey Chase was so far from even-tempered it wasn’t funny. I could practically smell the anger in him right now, and when he turned, his usually sparkling eyes blazing with fury, I gulped and thanked God he was my friend and not an enemy.
Because this man wasn’t tame, he just appeared to be.
Grabbing clothes fast and shoving them into a case, I didn’t argue myself to death about going with Trey, even though it scared me some. The last thing I needed was Caleb getting wind of it, and dammit, thinking about his reaction to one innocent date that wasn’t even a real date, I shivered.
“Come on, babe. Let’s go. You’re staying with me from now on.” Trey informed me, grabbing my suitcases and pulling me out just as another truck stopped, and Caleb jumped out.
“Oh, Lord.” I groaned, sighing loudly, when he spotted us, saw the cases, and stormed our way.
“Bro—”
“Let me get Ren home, and I’ll come back,” Caleb said, cutting off whatever Trey tried to say and stalking back to lift me.
I choked, speechless as he dumped me in his truck, and by the time I could speak, he was zipping into his driveway and barreling out to grab my bags.
“Erm—”
“Don’t start. Get your scrawny ass into the house and eat dinner, Ren.” Caleb grunted, stomping into the house to deposit my suitcases in the hallway.
I was walking in, ready to blast him and demand I go with Trey, when he walked toward me, stopped, and shook his head with a long-suffering sigh.
“Don’t overthink it, and relax. Please. Eat some of that amazing dinner you cooked, take a bath to relax, and then sleep. You look wrung out, Ren.” Caleb murmured, his eyes soft as he touched my cheek before he turned to leave, making sure to lock up behind him.
Sighing because I was way too tired and tense to argue, I let it go and did what he’d told me to do, foregoing dinner for the guest bathroom.
We were going to need to talk, and soon.
Which sucked because that tingling intuition that had been cropping up lately was getting worse, and I was pretty sure it was telling me to run. Hard and fast.
To avoid heartbreak.
Caleb
“Goddammit.” I groaned, rolling over onto my back and glaring when my cock tented the sheets, the thing so hard I felt like I was going to explode.
I’d spent a good hour talking to Cole and Trey while I’d looked over the trailer. After, I'd come back home to Ren’s scent, her presence in my home. It worked me up, knowing she was safe and under my roof. So much so my body grew hard and so strung out I’d spent another hour drinking in the hopes that I could avoid this.
“Fuck.” I huffed, rolling again and coming to my feet, unable to take it another minute.
She may kick me in the balls, but I had to at least try, I told myself, as a curl of nervousness filled me, and I walked down the hall. Cracking her door open, I peered through the darkness.
“Caleb?” I heard her voice soft in the darkness and so sexy. I groaned softly and stepped inside, letting her see me.
With her vision, I knew she could see that I was naked, and when I heard a gasp followed by a breathy moan, I smiled darkly.
