“I’m taking him home.” Mr. Hot Deputy glares at me.
“I don’t have you down as an authorized person. I’ll have to see I.D. and check with the office.”
“Are you serious?”
“School rules apply to everyone, even men of the law.” I try to joke, but he shakes his head, fishing his license out of his wallet.
I smile at Walker as I grab my walky-talky and page the secretary. I look at the license, reading the name to her.
He even looks good in his license picture. No one ever looks good in those. Is this guy some kind of mythical creature? A vampire fromTwilight?
Edward, is that you?
I keep my eyes on the license while I wait for the secretary to check her notes. Nathan is only three years older than me, too.
Down girl. This isn’t some dating site match-up.
He’s originally from Dallas. It makes sense since Walker is from there, too.
You’re a genius, Lizzy. They may just hire you as a detective.
“He’s cleared,” the secretary says.
“Oh. Okay, yeah. Thanks.”
“Here you go, Mr. Nathan. I mean, Deputy.”Shut up.
“Have a good weekend, Walker.”
“Thanks, Ms. Andrews. You too!” Walker skips away ahead of his uncle, who is staring at me for a beat longer than normal and crossing into awkward.
“I trust you won’t make any unnecessary calls anymore.”
“Nope!” I hold my phone up. “This bad boy will rest on a table if I need to carry laundry.”
He doesn’t even chuckle at my bad joke. Tough crowd.
As he walks away, Walker asks him if they can stop by the grocery store to buy ice cream. Nathan wraps his arm around his neck and smiles.
I hadn’t seen him smile, and it’s a glamorous thing. Dimples pop up on his cheeks, and I’m ready to dive into them.
Dive into them? What in the world does that mean?
“Mr. Nathan?” Andrea says.
“Shut up.”
“He’s hot,” she continues.
I groan and lean against the wall.
“If it makes you feel better, when I was in college, I totally entered my RA’s dorm by mistake and caught him naked in the hallway.”
“Why was he naked in the hallway?”
“How the hell should I know? I screamed, beat him with a pillow, and then ran. That’s when I realized I was in the wrong dorm.”
“Oh, my goodness!” My entire body shakes with laughter, tears in my eyes. “Stop it. That’s hilarious!”
