“It’s okay. I’m safe now. You saved me.”
“Safe,” he agrees.
After that, he washes my hair then conditions it for me. It feels wonderful. The stress from the day flows out of me, and I’m putty in Jasper’s hands. He quickly washes himself then dries us both off. He wraps me up in my fuzzy robe then carries me back to the bedroom.
“I can walk, you know.”
He just growls at me.
“Oookay,” I say with a smile. I wrap my arms around his neck and enjoy the ride. If it makes him feel better to cart me around, then that’s fine with me. I like being in his arms, so I won’t be complaining anytime soon.
“Are you hungry?” he asks.
I shake my head. “No, just exhausted.”
“That would be the adrenaline crash.”
“Probably so. Will you lay in bed with me?”
“There’s nowhere else I’d rather be,” he says.
I strip off my robe, and we crawl under the covers together. I settle in against his chest and he runs his fingertips over my back, soothing me into a restful sleep. Hours later, I wake up alone in bed but can hear Jasper speaking to someone just on the other side of the bedroom door.
“When she wakes up, I’ll call you. I’m not dragging her to the police station to give a statement. You can come here.” Jasper says something else, but I can’t hear him clearly. He must hang up the phone because seconds later, the door opens, and he strides into the room wearing nothing but a pair of jeans.
“You’re awake,” he says almost scoldingly.
I smile, happy to see him even if he’s grumpy at me. “Hi.”
He shakes his head, then his grumpy frown turns to a smile. “Hi, babygirl. Did you sleep well?”
“Yeah. I’m wide awake now. Who was on the phone?”
“Jenkins, my old partner from my cop days. He wants to interview you about what happened, and I told him off.”
I giggle a little. “I’m going to have to talk to them eventually.”
If a man like Jasper could pout, I’d say he’s pouting now. “I’d rather you not have to deal with that asshole.”
This time I laugh. “He can’t be that much of an asshole if he helped you save me.”
Jasper grumbles but then agrees with me.
“Call him back and tell him to come over. I just want to get this over with and move on.”
“Are you sure? I’ll make him wait as long as you need.”
I lean in and kiss Jasper’s chest. “I’m sure.”
He nods and picks up his phone, dialing his friend. “She’s up and ready to talk to you.”
The next two hours are spent talking to Detective Jenkins about my time with Dima. He’s pretty disappointed in the fact that my whole time there I was basically kept in a room getting gussied up. I don’t know what he expected me to know.
We do talk about my father and how I ended up in this position to begin with… He was very, very interested in that. I have a feeling my dad is going to be getting some payback for selling me off to Dima. I don’t even feel bad about it.
By the time he leaves, I’m hungry and exhausted. Jasper orders Chinese food and we snuggle on the couch waiting for our food to arrive. He runs his fingers through my hair, and my eyes fall closed.
“You doing okay, babygirl?”
