“Stupid place to put it,” he muttered, checking the ID. It was a number he hadn’t seen before, but he answered anyway. “Jason Munro.”
Silence. Jason checked the call. Did he not answer it? Sure enough, it said that he was on the call, and the timer was counting. He put the phone back to his ear. “Hello? Anyone there?”
Again, silence. But Jason could hear some heavy breathing. Not this again. He had been getting calls like this since he took on the Wolves. They were almost always inconvenient, calling him in the middle of the night or while he was in a meeting. Due to many vendors and employees who weren’t saved in his contacts, Jason would naturally answer the calls, only to hear someone breathing hard at the other end.
And most of them ended up being this damn idiot who thought it was funny to give him obscene calls.
Sighing, Jason hung up and shoved his phone in his pocket. He was not going into it today. Right now, he had something more important to focus on, and that was getting Elena Duncan back to Wenstown before she changed her mind and decided to go back to Seattle.
When Carl had told him he wanted Elena on the support team, Jason had wondered why he would want someone who hadn’t even applied to join them. Then he had taken a look at Elena’s website, and found that she was more than a perfect choice. Her background was impressive, her credentials something anyone in the industry would be proud of.
And she was really pretty to look at, if the photo of her was anything to go by. Jason didn’t want that to be something that influenced his decision to try and get her on the team, but it was certainly helping.
You’re not bringing her in so you can have some eye candy. Be a businessman and focus on the business.
As Jason left the house and headed over to his car, his phone started ringing again. Another unknown number. This time, Jason was more dubious as he answered.
“Hello?”
Yet again, nothing on the other end. Or rather, nothing audible. He could hear some sniggering at the other end, followed by someone shushing.
Rolling his eyes, Jason hung up. Stupid kids were playing pranks. He could handle that, for the most part.
Still, maybe he should see about getting a new number and making that private. Then he wouldn’t have idiots calling him up for a laugh.
He backed the car out of the drive, and made his way through the outskirts of Wenstown, heading onto the freeway towards Lincoln. As he passed places he remembered from his younger days, Jason was hit by a wave of nostalgia. This place was perfect for young families. It was quiet, with just enough action to make things interesting, and enough green spaces that allowed the stunning scenery to shine, even in the colder months. Jason remembered going for long walks in the woods outside of the town with his dad. Sometimes, they had done adventurous things; other times they had just laid down in a field and soaked up the world. As a kid, Jason hadn’t wanted much. His time with his dad, when he was home from work, was precious.
As an adult, Jason appreciated that fact he had got to spend that much time with his father. He wished they could do it again, mostly so Jason could show his dad that he was fulfilling his dream of owning a sports team. Lance would be delighted to know that his son had bought the Wolves.
Hopefully. Jason didn’t want to be overconfident about it just yet, but he hoped it would be a good investment.
Then his dad would be looking down on him in pride.
His cellphone started its usual ringtone again. Jason was beginning to get fed up hearing the damn thing, especially when there was nothing at the end of it. It was connected up to his car, so he answered the hands-free call without checking the number.
“Just fuck off!” he shouted. “It’s not funny! Stop fucking calling me!”
“I beg your pardon, Jason? Watch your language!”
“Mom!” Jason’s annoyance dissipated. “God, I’m so sorry! I thought it was someone else.”
“I figured as much,” his mother said dryly. “Who on earth were you meant to be cursing? I hope it’s not someone I know.”
“I don’t know,” he sighed. “I’ve been getting calls where nobody says anything. They’re just breathing at the other end.”
Sarah chuckled. “Aren’t you the wrong gender to be getting obscene calls?”
“Men can get them as well, Mom. Although I don’t think they’re doing it for sexual pleasure. It sounds like a group of kids messing around. They’re driving me mad.”
“Well, if you will put your phone number on the team’s website…”
“I know, that was a mistake. I’m going to have to get a new number if I want the damn things to stop.”
Sarah grunted. “Good luck with that. They’ll just switch to your email instead.”
“I know they will. But at least I won’t have any heavy breathing in my ear when I’m looking at emails.”
Although the emails were harsher. Jason was beginning to regret trying to be open and friendly to the team’s fans so he could be seen as approachable. It was like he was asking for trouble, and he was paying the price for it.
