Finally, home after a hard day in court. This last case kicked my ass. The heads of the company I filed a claim against refused to agree on back wages and demanded their day in court, thinking it was going to be an easy win. The joke’s on them. I was able to get the employees what they deserved and then some. The look on those suits’ faces when the judge handed down her decision was priceless. Now all I want to do is cuddle up with my wife and kiss this day goodbye.

Pulling up to our modest home, I thank the heavens above for bringing Sarah into my life. She’s all that I hoped for, and more. I still remember the day she finally agreed to marry me, claiming she only said yes because she was tired of me asking.

I only seriously asked twice, the first time a week after we’d been together and then this last time. The other twenty or so times I was joking— sort of. I mean, I wouldn’t have turned down a yes. It took six months for her to give in, which I guess in the grand scheme of things isn’t a long time. At least I got her to move in with me after only a month.

“Sarah,” I call out when I walk through the door.

Getting no reply, I put my stuff away and go in search of my wife. The car is here, and she works from home building websites, so I know she’s here.

After leaving her job at Forever Love, Sarah thought long and hard about what to do next and ultimately decided to go into business for herself, ensuring she’ll never have to deal with horrible bosses ever again. Occasionally, she gets a difficult client or two, but she handles it well, having the full power to terminate the contract if things are too rough.

I’m almost to her office when deep from within the house her sweet voice asks, “Mark? Is that you?”

Chuckling, I answer back, “Who else would it be?”

It’s only us here in this quiet little plot far removed from the main strip. The good thing about living in Lockton is that there’s a little bit for everybody, the city and the semi-country life.

Sarah pops out of the bedroom, grinning from ear to ear with a trail of tears running down her sculpted cheeks. Instantly I’m worried. Sure, she’s smiling, but what are those tears for? Did something happen while I was at work?

I rush over to where she stands, gently drawing her into my arms. “What’s wrong? Why are you crying?”

“Nothing is wrong. I’m okay. I just got excited. Everything is fine… more than fine, actually. It’s wonderful.”

“Okay,” I slowly say. “So why the tears, then?”

“Happy tears. Come on.” Sarah pulls away and grabs my arm. She drags me into the bedroom and then motions for me to sit.

I forget about the scene from a minute ago, the moment her warm body settles itself in my lap, thinking now only of how fast I can get her naked. I’m working on the buttons on her shirt when she blurts out, “I’m pregnant!”

My newly pregnant wife almost hits the floor as my body involuntarily reacts, leaping up at her big news.

“Oh, baby, are you okay?” I frantically run my hands down her body, checking for any injuries. I caught her before she fell, but you can never be too sure.

Sarah lets out a watery laugh, adding more tears to the ones that were just starting to dry. “Wait till I tell Amber you almost dropped me. You’ll never hear the end of it.”

“Yeah, well, she’s still saying ‘I told you so’ about us. It’ll just be another thing to add. But forget about that. Are you really pregnant?” Placing my hand on her flat stomach, I move it in a small circle, not believing a part of us is growing inside her.

She nods her head, blue eyes shining bright with unshed tears and overall joy at the beginning of the new chapter of our lives. We haven’t been actively trying for a baby, but we haven’t been not trying. We both want at least two kids. Planning our lives during late-night talks.

Cupping my hands around her face, I hold her gaze, wanting her to hear my next words. “I love you, Sarah. You and this baby me everything to me. I promise I’ll be the best father I can be. One you will be proud of. Thank you for coming into my life.”

“Oh honey, I love you too. You’re already the best husband. I know you’ll make a great dad. Thank you for coming into my life.”

As we stand there holding each other, both so full of emotion it has nowhere to go but out of our eyes and down our faces. I again, just like I do every day, thank whoever brought this angel into my life.
