“She’s beautiful.”
Mack stiffened. “Yes, she is.”
Ewan grinned and stood. “I’ll take care of the problem we discussed.”
“How?” Jace asked.
“By informing the people involved that Kaylin is under our protection.”
“What will that do?” Mack asked.
“They know their lives will change … let’s saydramatically, if they put the finger on her. Do you understand?”
The men nodded. Mack understood that Ewan would never say anything to incriminate himself because he didn’t trust that they weren’t being recorded.
Mack stood and held out his hand. “Thank you.”
Ewan shook his hand and then Jace’s. “I’m glad to do it. My family doesn’t like people that prey on the defenseless.”
Jace nodded. “That’s what we’ve heard.”
Ewan chuckled. “It’s good to know that some people think we’re men instead of monsters.”
Mack nodded.
One of the men held the door open for his boss, and the other stood out in the hallway, looking around for any threat.
Ewan turned back. “I think this means you guys owe me, doesn’t it?”
Mack could tell the guy was trying to push their buttons. “Sure, as long as it’s legal.”
Ewan laughed. “Of course. Take care of your woman.”
“We intend to,” Mack said.
“Have a good day.”
Mack and Jace waited for a minute after the men left.
“What do you think?”
Jace sighed. “I trust him. By the time he gets the word out, no one in the city will mess with our woman.”
Mack felt like a weight had been lifted off his chest. They would still keep an eye out and keep her close, but the panicky feeling was gone.
Chapter Twenty-Two
Kaylin looked up to see Jace in the doorway, smiling at her.
“Is everything okay, Daddy?”
“Yes, baby. Everything is great.”
“Who was that man?”
“He is going to make sure those bad men leave you alone.”
“But you and Daddy Mack were already doing that.”
