She stood and faced Brody. “Thank you for all your help.”

Jace watched her leave as the anger inside of him built. “What can we do?”

“I’ve been thinking about this,” Brody said. “They don’t know she had seen them or could recognize them. They’re just trying to get rid of anything that can potentially take them down. I say destroy or lock up the pictures she’s drawn. Now, this is going to sound crazy, but I think you should talk to the mafia involved.”

Jace stiffened. “What?”

Brody held up a hand. “Listen. This family is known for protecting women and children. I think if you tell them the situation, they might be able to do something.”

“Like what?” Mack asked.

“I’m hoping they’ll threaten Jackson and Swartz,” Brody said.

“Would they do that?” Jace asked.

“I’m not positive, but it’s worth a try. I don’t think you guys have anything to worry about. It’s just people that cross them who should be terrified.”

Jace glanced at Mack, who shrugged. “We’ve got to try, at least.”

Jace sighed and nodded. “Do you know how and who to get in touch with in the family?”

“I’ll give you a number I was given. Hopefully, it’s one of the brothers or someone who knows how to get in touch with them,” Brody said.

Jace wiped a hand down his face. He and Mack had been in the FBI and now worked for the district attorney, so it could ruin their careers if anyone found out about a meeting. The thought of dealing with the mafia made him sick, but he knew he’d do anything in his power to protect Kaylin.

“All right. We’ll try.”

Brody stood and handed him the file. “The number’s in there. Call me if you need anything, but I’m going to stay away for now. I don’t know if I’m being watched, but I don’t want to bring anything to you guys. You have enough on your plate protecting Kaylin.”

“Thanks, man,” Mack said.

“No problem.”

Jace picked up his phone. “Let’s get this done.”

Mack nodded and sat back.

The call was answered quickly. “The Maclean residence. How may I help you?”

“Yes. I would like to discuss a problem I have with a Maclean.”

“Which one, sir?”

“How many of them are there?”

“There are eight brothers, sir.”

Hell. “I guess anyone that’s available.”

“May I ask who’s calling?”

“This is Jace Foreman.”

“Leave your number, and I’ll have one call you.”

Jace pinched the bridge of his nose. He hoped he was doing the right thing. “All right. Thank you.”
