“In the alley?” Mack asked.
“Yeah.”
Mack set his hand on her shoulder. “Do you recognize him?”
Kaylin studied the picture. “Yeah. It’s that asshole cop.”
“Language,” Jace snapped.
“But he is an asshole, Daddy,” she said.
Mack hid his smile when Jace just snorted.
“How about we make an early night of it? I think we’re all tired.”
“Okay. I can finish this later.”
“Good,” Jace said. “Go on up, baby. We’ll check the doors and windows.”
Mack watched her walk out of the kitchen before he turned to Jace. “What?”
“I know this is far-fetched, but do you think the two cops—the one from the alley and the one from the office—know each other or are associated?”
“Fuck. That would explain how the one in the office knew where she was because I gave the other one my card.”
“I just can’t see the fucker take a chance going to jail because she kicked him. There’s got to be more to it.”
Mack nodded. “I agree. Let’s call Brody into the office tomorrow and discuss it with him.”
“Good idea.”
Mack slapped his back. “Don’t worry, man. We’ll figure it out.”
“You bet we will. No one’s going to fuck with our girl.”
Mack agreed wholeheartedly. He’d kill anyone that tried to hurt her.
Chapter Nineteen
Mack walked into Jace’s office to find Brody, the cop, waiting for him. He closed the door behind him and leaned against it.
“Did you show him the picture?” Mack asked.
Jace nodded. “Why don’t you tell him?” Jace said to Brody.
Brody sighed. “The guy that was here the other day and the one from this picture, Detective Swartz, are suspected of working together. They used to be partners years ago, and they’re both as crooked as you can get.”
“In your opinion, is this Swartz crazy enough to kidnap a woman that kicked him?” Jace asked.
“No, the guy doesn’t take chances. That’s how he’s been able to keep going. There has to be something else.”
“Can you get a picture of a few men they work with? I know I’m grasping at straws, but it’s the only thing I can think of,” Mack said.
“Sure. I’ll fax it to you when I get back to the office,” Brody said.
“Good. We’ll be waiting.”
Mack waited until the cop left. “What are you thinking about?”
