“Hey, we’re just trying to be good daddies.”

She wanted to slap him again but instead just rolled her eyes.

He got her in the back of their car and buckled her up before he kissed her.

“I’ll give you more when we get home.”

“M’kay.”

He chuckled and shut her door.

Kaylin settled back and watched them pull out of the parking lot behind their office building. She half-heartedly listened to the guys, but most of her thoughts were on what they would do to her when they got home.

When they stopped at the light, she caught sight of a face in the crowd that looked familiar, but she couldn’t remember it. She knew he’d seen her when he stared back at her with a mean look. Even not knowing who the guy was, a dark fear tightened her stomach.

“What are you looking at, baby?” Jace asked.

“I saw a face, and I recognized it from somewhere. The way he looked at me, he recognized me, too. He wasn’t a happy man.”

She could feel the tension in the car.

“Do you think you can draw him?” Mack asked as he studied her from the front seat.

“Yes. I think so. It’s driving me crazy where I saw him before and why he’d be mad at me.”

“We’ll figure it out, babe. Just relax, and we’ll get you home.”

She nodded and kept looking out the window as the car pulled away, but she didn’t catch sight of the man again.

Chapter Eighteen

Mack opened Kaylin’s car door and let her out. “Come on, baby.”

He wrapped an arm around her waist and led her into the house and then the kitchen. He boosted her up onto a chair. “How about we make dinner? We’ll cuddle later. We’d like you to see if you can draw the man’s face for us. Do you want to try?”

She nodded. “Yes. It’s going to drive me crazy until I know.”

Jace put some paper and pencils in front of her on the counter. “Why don’t you start on that while we make dinner?”

She nodded and got to work.

Mack glanced at her as they made the pasta. When he looked at his friend, he could see the same worry he was feeling now. He kept reminding himself that he and Jace were trained and could keep her safe. It was just the unknown that bothered him.

“Put the things to the side, baby, so we can eat. You can work on it after,” Mack said.

He caught a glimpse of her drawing and could only see the shape of the head and his eyes. His memory went over people he knew, but it wasn’t enough of a picture to tell for sure.

The guys made small talk to keep the tension down. It seemed to work because she smiled a few times and seemed to relax.

“Stay at the table,” Mack said. “Jace and I will clean up.”

“Okay, I’ll work on the picture.”

The guys took their time because they could see Kaylin concentrate so hard, and they didn’t want to disturb her. After an hour, Mack walked behind her and glanced over her shoulder. Jesus, he knew the guy, but he didn’t know from where.

“Jace, come here and look. I’ve seen him somewhere.”

Jace studied the picture. “Fuck, it’s that cop she quarreled with after the ambulance took Mirna away.”
