“That was Kane. I emailed him the drawing, and he showed it to the girls. He said they yelledyes.”

“We didn’t need their input, but it helps,” Brody said. “Especially since the manager here couldn’t get a clean shot of the guy. He definitely knew what he was doing.”

“We need all the help we can get. What about your partner? Are you going to bring him in on this?” Mack asked.

“He’s only been my partner a few months, so I don’t know him well enough to put my trust in him yet. I’ve been on the force for twelve years. He just started a year ago, and so far, he’s doing good.”

“We’ll let you decide on that. Could you come to a meeting with us this week?” Jace asked.

“Yes. Tell me where and I’ll be there. I get off at two most days unless something big goes down and they need me.”

“We get that. I’ll text you the place,” Jace said.

“Sounds good. I’m going to leave the picture with you. I don’t want anyone accidentally seeing it,” Brody said.

Mack shook his hand. “Thanks.”

After Brody left, he turned to Jace. “What in the hell? How is she somehow involved with a corrupt cop?”

“I have no idea, but we’ll find out.”

“You’re damn right we will. I’m going to check on her before getting more work done.” He wouldn’t be able to work until he had his eyes on her.

Chapter Seventeen

Kaylin looked up when Mack walked through her door. Right away, she could tell something was wrong.

“What’s wrong?” she asked.

“Can you come into Jace’s office for a minute?”

She took the hand that Mack held out. If she didn’t trust them so much, she would have been worried because of the tone of his voice.

Mack sat and pulled her down onto his lap. She looked back and forth.

“Brody, the cop, was here with the picture you drew,” Jace said. “He told us the guy is a corrupt cop.”

Her mouth dropped open. The guy being a cop had never crossed her mind because he had been so cruel and dangerous looking.

“Why would he want me?”

“That’s what we’re trying to figure out,” Mack said.

“It seems you pissed someone off,” Jace said.

“I don’t think so. I’ve always been a nice person,” she said.

“Could it be something you have?’ Mack asked.

“You guys saw what I had with me. The book you saw and the rolled-up pictures were my drawings.”

“What kind of drawings?” Jace asked.

“The neighborhood and the people. I made up stories about them in my head. It helped pass the time.”

“I’d rather not be reminded of the time you spent on the streets, baby,” Mack drawled.

She smiled and pressed a kiss to his cheek. “Just think. We probably wouldn’t have met if I hadn’t been where I was.”
