Mirna’s face popped into her mind. What would the older woman do in this situation? She’d been her only mentor, but Kaylin knew the woman’s mind was messed up and sometimes didn’t understand what she was saying. However, other times, the older woman had made perfect sense. She’d probably tell her to face the guys and get her answers or run and hide somewhere they’d never find her. Kaylin wished she could talk to someone and ask their opinion because she didn’t know what to do.
Kaylin stood at the window and wrapped her arms around her waist. People were hurrying down the sidewalk on their way to their homes or maybe dinner. That made her stomach cramp. She hadn’t eaten since breakfast, and her body was getting used to having regular meals. If she went back on the street, she’d have to learn to do without again.
A sound behind her made her turn to see Mack and Jace standing inside the door with scowls on their faces.
“Do you want to tell us why you’re hiding?” Jace asked.
She looked at them. There was no way she’d be able to get past them.
“I just needed some time to myself,” she said.
“Why?” Mack said.
“I have a lot of things to figure out.”
Mack’s face got darker. “Like what?”
“My life.”
“What about us?” Jace said.
“I think it’s time that I move on…”
“What!” Jace barked. “Where the fuck is this coming from?”
“You guys.”
The men glanced at each other in confusion.
“Explain.”
“Do I have to? This is your chance to get rid of me. I don’t want you to worry about me anymore. You’ve both done so much for me. Because of you, I can eventually get a job and an apartment.”
“I want to know where our chance to get rid of you comes from?” Jace asked. “And you better not lie.”
“I heard you.”
“Heard what?” Mack asked.
“In the office. You said I was getting to the point where I could take care of myself, and then you asked what you would do with me.”
“Is that all of the conversation you heard?” Jace asked.
“Yeah, but that was enough. I was going to get word to you, but I just didn’t know how to get ahold of anyone.”
Jace wiped a hand down his face. “I wish you’d heard the whole conversation.”
“How did you find me?”
Mack got her attention. “There are security cameras everywhere, baby. When we finally got ahold of the building manager, we had him look through what he had caught today. We saw you go into our office and a minute later rush out. We then followed you down the hallway to this office.”
Kaylin sighed.
“You could have saved a lot of distress. We had so many people looking for you.”
“I don’t mean to be a problem. I just needed some time.”
“To figure out how to leave us?” Jace asked in a rough tone.
