“I’m going home to my mom’s. The club is going to make sure I get there okay,” Rachel said.
“I’m so happy for you.”
Mindy raised her hand. “My boyfriend moved on. He was thrilled to hear I was still alive. I knew he probably had another girlfriend by now.”
“So, what are you going to do?” Ella asked.
“Me, Emily, and Tessa are going to live together. We’ll be a great support for each other,” Mindy said. “The club will get us an apartment and jobs if we want them.”
“So, you’ll be around here?” Ella asked.
“Yes. At least for now.”
Ella looked at Bridget. “What about you?”
“I talked to my husband. He didn’t sound too excited to have me back. It’s a lot to ask him to let me slip back into his life after what happened to me. I’m not sure we’ll last, but at least I get to be with my little boy. I missed his third birthday. Bradley, my husband, said we could have another one.”
Ella prayed they’d work it out.
Ella was there when Bridget and Theresa’s husbands and Rachel’s mother came to get them. She was sad to see them go but so incredibly happy they would be away from the monster and make a life for themselves.
Ella leaned back in the truck seat as Ax drove them back to the compound.
“How are you feeling?” Ax asked.
She rolled her head toward him. He had a strong profile. There was nothing soft about the man. She could tell his nose had been broken a few times. She had noticed that every man in the club had a crooked nose and/or scars she could see. They hadn’t lived a charmed life.
“It’s incredible. I am so thrilled for them. I just pray they get everything they want.”
“You’re a good person,” he said.
“You are, too.”
Ax snorted. “You’ve seen a side of me I didn’t know I had, but my natural disposition is a ruthless, brutal biker. Don’t ever forget that.”
She couldn’t ever forget that she was living with a motorcycle club, but the only side of Ax she’d seen was him being a nice guy.
“I won’t. Will you ever be like that with me?” she asked.
He picked up her hand and kissed her knuckles. “Never.”
Ella relaxed.
“The thing that will make me feel like it’s over is to see the men.”
Ax cleared his throat. “I doubt Fury will let you.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s dangerous, and the guys do everything in our power to make things safe for you.”
“But you said they’re tied up.”
“Yes, they are, and they have guards with them.”
“Then how can it be dangerous?” she asked.
“Babe, let it go,” Ax said.
