Probably wasn’t the best idea to take out Marco but fucking with our girls was an unforgiveable offense. And everyone knew that.

I’d rather be overseeing the setup for my Halloween party, but instead I was getting dressed in all-black everything, including a Kevlar vest, prepping to get a shipment of guns. We needed untraceable weapons for what we did. In fact, the only way we were able to conduct our business without getting caught was because of untraceable weaponry. And we blew through it fast, which meant we needed the supply.

Bash recently took over the shipments coming into the docks down in Fremont, which meant an hour drive to the water, exchanging pleasantries with our enemies, and handing over a huge sum of cash in exchange for illegal guns.

Dad was wise to call in as many reinforcements as possible. I had no fucking clue if Bash was setting us up. He was still on the hunt for his brother, who had since been disintegrating in a vat of acid, buried on some abandoned property north of Gilchrist Point. There was no way we could be linked to his disappearance–our cleaners made it look like Marco left Ethereal after a night of fun, driving off in his flashy Porsche. We took the car to one of our guys who stripped it down and sold off the parts, disposing of evidence and making a few bucks for the trouble.

I shed a tear for that car.

Once I was dressed and ready to go, I went out to the driveway where I left my SUV. I had to pick up my cousin West over in Gilchrist Point, which was at least a half hour drive. I was about to slide in the vehicle when Xavier’s midnight blue Mustang whipped down the driveway and parked next to me.

Xavier got out–dressed like me–wearing all black and a bulletproof vest covering his torso. Dani hopped out of the passenger seat dressed the same way.

“Where the fuck do you think you’re going?” I asked her.

“To some fucking gun deal. Where do you think?”

“You’re not going with us. X, get in the car. I’ll drive.”

Xavier smiled and proceeded to get in the passenger seat. Dani went to open the back door but I slammed it shut.

“I’m fucking going, Kane. You know I’m a good shot. I’ll stay in the back. No one has to know I’m there.”

“It’s too risky. Marco’s brother will be there, and if he has an idea that you were the one with him the night he disappeared, we’ll be fucked.”

“If I remember correctly, youwere the one who killed Marco. Not me.”

She went to open the door again but I grabbed both of her wrists, pulling her from the vehicle. “Get your fucking hands off me!”

Without a word, I dragged her up to the garage. She kicked and jerked the whole way, not stopping until I released her.

“You’re not going. End of discussion.” I went to tuck a piece of hair behind her ear but she slapped my hand away. “It’s too dangerous.”

“Not too dangerous for you, though. I’ve done much worse than a little gun run.” She crossed her arms over her chest and scowled.

“I know. But the difference is, you shouldn’t have to. Go hang out with Gemma or something.”

Dani narrowed her eyes at me. “She’s not even here. Fuck, I guess I’ll go crochet a blanket or do a puzzle or something.”

I smiled, knowing that I got my way. Dad didn’t specifically say she couldn’t go, but I didn’t want to have to worry about her getting recognized. Most of the guys in the Dominguez crew had been to Ethereal a time or two.

“Good girl. Wait, where’s Gemma?”

My sister wasn’t one to go out and party–at least not without the Thelma to her Louise.

“She’s hanging with a friend.”

“A friend? Who? You’re her only friend.”

“I’ll be sure to tell her you said that,” Dani said as she patted my shoulder and walked around me. She pulled her phone from her insanely tight black jeans and started typing.

I couldn’t help myself. “What are you going to do?”

She turned to me with a malicious grin on her face. “It’s Halloween and I don’t have to work. That means there’s all kinds of trouble I can get into.”

“Jesus fucking Christ. Would you just tell me so I don’t have to worry about saving your ass while I’m in the middle of a shitshow in Fremont?” I huffed.

Her smile dropped. “Fine. Since you’re such a fucking baby about absolutely everything, I’m ordering food and going to hang with Bobby for a while. Then, I’m going up to your lair and watching a scary movie on that big ass TV of yours. I’m going to eat my weight in popcorn, and try not to think about how bored I am. Got a problem with that?”
