“You.. Wow… I mean, you’re hot.”

Hot? Was he thirteen?

“I mean sexy. Wasn’t that one of the words a lady likes to hear?”

“Nice save, Hunter. Hold on, let me get my handbag. This dress doesn’t have pockets and Ivy said I had to carry a purse.”

Hunter looked at the bag, no bigger than a cell phone, and wondered if that was all she had in it.

“Come on, Byte, your chariot awaits.”

He extended his arm and led her to the elevator. He had gone through multiple security checks before Ghost let him have access to the building. Now leaving, he wondered what other obstacles he’d have to jump over.

“You know, it might be awkward calling you Byte or GigaByte at the function. Is there something else you’d like for me to call you?”

After they stepped inside the elevator, Byte told him her alias. “Heidi is an elitist society girl. She’s wealthy and all hoity-toity. She’s the perfect cover for this event.”

“And do I have an alias?”

“Only being Heidi’s… brother?”

Hunter’s thoughts were not brotherly.

“No. Try again.”

“Boy toy?”

“I think I’m too old to be called a boy.”

“True.”

“Hey.”

“You said it. I just agreed. So if not brother, then maybe boyfriend. Or perhaps a male friend.”

No way was he being friend zoned.

“Forget what I said about not being a boy. Boyfriend is just fine.”

Better than fine,he thought.

“You can use your name. Honestly, the focus will be on me.”

“I bet it will.”

“I mean, if I don’t get noticed, I’ll make sure I do.”

“I have to say, since your world became intertwined with mine, I’ve been kidnapped three times, learned to hack, and now I’m going undercover to catch a pervert. I bet life would never be boring with you around.”

“Stick with me kid. I’ll bring a little color to those black socks.”

“Again with my socks. Should I have worn a different color?”

“No, you’re great just the way you are.”

Byte felt both giddy and nauseous at the same time. She was flirting. This was a new area in her life… and she liked it, and so did he, based on his smile.

But she needed to remind herself, it was most likely Heidi he liked. Nothing about Heidi spoke of Byte.
