“What do you need them for?” Roberto asked.

“My right hand is hurting thanks to your other brute. It’s not broken, but I need someone to help with whatever job you are wanting me to do. I’m assuming you are wanting your four mil back.”

“Oscar can help you,” Roberto snapped.

“Who?”

“Him,” Roberto said, pointing at the enforcer standing by the door.

“No way. Look at the size of his sausage fingers. That won’t work. Kyle’s are thinner and probably much faster than Oscar’s.”

“Yes, sir. My fingers are quick,” Kyle stated.

“Kyle!” Hunter practically yelled. “You need to stay out of this.”

He then turned his attention to the minx still sitting on the floor, as if she didn’t have a care in the world.

“Leave him out of your criminal activities,” he ordered both to Roberto and Byte.

“Hey, he’s already committed a crime. Might as well let him save your life while he’s at it,” Byte reasoned.

Hunter looked from Byte’s wicked smile to his equally excited brother beside him and wondered if he was the only one with a working brain. This was not the time to smile and make jokes. They were in serious trouble, and Byte’s blasé attitude only seemed to encourage his brother.

Only Hunter wasn’t the only one not enjoying Byte’s behavior. He watched as the woman walked over to Roberto, who nodded and followed the guard outside the door.

“That wasn’t who I meant when I said we should clear the room,” Byte stated.

“They have business associates to contact. Once you and I are finished with business, I’m offering you up to the highest bidder.”

“And my brother and I? Should I even ask?”

“Do you really want to hear my answer?”

“That’s what I thought,” Hunter replied.

Untying Kyle and instructing Byte to stand, Roberto pulled out his handgun from his holster and motioned for the two to move out of the office.

“What about me?” Hunter called out. He didn’t want his brother to leave the room without him.

“You should bring him, if for no other reason, than it will keep Kyle working instead of worrying,” Byte suggested.

What is wrong with this girl? She was using reasoning and logic on a person who no doubt had taken many lives.

God help us.

Kyle’s chair was pushed as close to Byte’s as humanly possible. They needed to make it look like he was following her instructions. Hunter stood as a sentry as he moved left and right behind them. His pacing would’ve been frustrating, but instead it was causing the distraction Byte needed.

Oscar and Skylar had returned with a laptop in hand after Byte, Hunter, and Kyle had been taken to a large room that once held meetings, conferences, and probably training for the long-forgotten company’s employees. The warehouse had obviously been abandoned years prior based on its lack of maintenance and upkeep.

None of that bothered Byte. She’d worked in less desirable locations many times. However, for Hunter, the site was disgusting and definitely not how he’d expected to start his workweek. Thinking about his upcoming assignment made him also think about Byte’s comments on some of the books he’d recorded. Was she a fan? Did she listen to the book because of the author or the narrator? He wasn’t gloating. He’d received several accolades from avid fans who listened to his work regardless of the genre, fiction and nonfiction. He couldn’t see Byte doing that; however, he was curious what she thought about his readings.

Jostled back into reality, he paused his pacing when he heard Byte whisper to Kyle about sending a message to her team. How was that even possible with their actions being monitored by the couple? Kyle, in response, nodded his head and began to type the code Byte instructed.

Roberto walked up, having no understanding of the gibberish before him, and barked out orders.

“I want you to transfer the four million you took from me and another six million for stealing it.”
