“You and me both. Talk later. Tell my dad hello.”
After she disconnected the call, she pulled Bench out of the room and gave him the update.
“That’s not good. These aren’t the kind of guys who’ll forgive and forget. If she is outed, she will need to leave the city.”
“Send her our way if ATF doesn’t have a plan. We’ll keep her safe and put her to work.” Nodding to the closed door, she asked, “Tell me what to expect when I get inside.”
“Voodoo is speaking to her sister, who wasn’t awake, at least not when I left. Carter and Ghost are standing to the side, poised to step in if needed.”
“What a cluster...”
“Yep. I can watch the door until Seven arrives and then bid my goodbyes to Voodoo. She doesn’t need to worry about the job. We can figure it out. We took advantage of her stay to get closer to the agent, but we’ve got it from here. I’ll let her know.”
“Thank you. Okay, wish me luck,” she said as she pushed open the door and thankfully saw Chaos sitting up, taking a sip of water from the straw Voodoo was holding.
“When I told you to go and get some rest, I didn’t mean at the hospital,” Ghost jokingly said.
“You never rest while in the hospital,” Carter stated.
Ivy kept her attention, however, on the two women deep in a conversation without words.
Do you trust him?
Yes. He’s not the bad guy here. It’s that woman... Vanessa something.
“Fulbright,” Voodoo said out loud, then realized the others hadn’t heard her and her sister’s internal conversation.
“It was Vanessa Fulbright who attacked you.”
“She thought I would recognize her. When I didn’t, she became angry, saying something about always being invisible when I was around. I’m thinking that theIwas directed at you.”
Voodoo nodded and continued to tell her sister about Vanessa and her business relationship to Carter. She omitted the personal one, which was for the best. Everyone needed to stay focused on their assignment.
“Um, that makes sense. I mean, you’d met his partner before, or so I’d assume.”
“Yes.”
“So it would stand to reason that she thought I was you and that you would recognize her. But why did she want me, or I guess, you, dead?”
“Because of me,” Carter stated. “She’s in love with me.” Voodoo sucked in a breath. She knew it but it hurt to hear.
“Interesting, and are you in love with her?”
“No! Never!”
“Soft voice, big man.” Pointing at her wrapped head, Chaos continued. “Headache, remember.”
“Sorry, Daisy. I got you into this and I will get you out of it. Vanessa will never be a threat to you, either of you, again.”
Voodoo didn’t doubt he would do as he vowed. There were still a lot of questions between them, but one thing she didn’t question was his commitment to a job. He would see this through regardless if they had a future or not.
“Good. So who’s next?”
“I am,” Ghost said as he moved closer to the bed, forcing Carter to step back when Ivy joined him.
“Tell us what you know about Raptor.”
Daisy, the sister, had left the room and Chaos, the hacker, had returned.
