“Are you mad at me?”

She shrugs. “Should I be?”

Unease makes my throat tight. Does she know about the call with Jafar?

Prepared for the worst, I say, “Jasmine, I really don’t know, but if I’ve done something, then I think it’s only fair that you tell me so I can make it right.”

“It’s annoying that I brought you out here to help, and I feel like you’re avoiding me.”

“You asked me out here to help with the gala, and that’s what I’ve been doing. I’ve been there every day, working. Where have you been?”

She rolls her eyes. “I’ve been getting ready for my husband’s return. I’ve decided it’s time to start our family.”

Hurt spears me, and for that, I know I’m going to hell.

“When does Jafar get back?”

Jasmine sips her water, shrugging. “Tonight, I think. Or maybe tomorrow.”

“I’m sure you’ll be happy to see him.”

“I guess.” Her face lights up. “Dru! We’re over here.”

I bite back a groan as Dru joins us.

“It’s pouring out there,” she says, shaking water from her jacket all over me.

A server rushes over, taking her jacket from her. She’s smirking as she sits in the empty seat next to Jasmine. My hand grips the water glass. Wonder what she’d do if I threw it at her? Immediately, my hand drops to my lap.

“Did you get my text about the dress?” Jasmine asks her.

“I did! You are going to look stunning!”

“Right? Everyone’s outfit is going to look like trash next to mine.”

Feeling left out, I ask, “What dress?”

“Did I not show you?” She fishes her phone from her purse, swiping. “Here.”

The gown is beautiful, reminding me of something right out ofArabian Nights. The sheer teal fabric is whimsical and stunning at the same time.

“Jasmine, this is so pretty!”

“I know.”

“What are you going to do with your hair?”

“I was thinking of leaving it down.”

I shake my head. “You should do a poofy ponytail with several sections tied off with gold accents.”

Dru snorts. “That doesn’t sound very sophisticated. I think leaving it down is best.”

Jasmine agrees. “Me too.”

They share a look that leaves me feeling like they’re laughing at me. I don’t like it, but I also don’t know what to do about it. If I speak my mind, she’s going to say I’m misreading the situation, and then I’ll be left feeling like a fool. The server arrives, taking our orders. I was going to eat an actual meal until both Jasmine and Dru ordered salads.

“I’ll have a salad, too,” I say with a smile.
