I couldn’t be the kind of guy she deserved.
I wanted to fuck her again, sure. Wanted it so badly that my dick ached at the thought of getting back inside her. She had felt incredible laid out beneath me on the sand, and I wanted to have her every which way I could. To take my time getting to know her body, her little tells, every way to make her moan my name.
But a date?
Carson was right. I didn’t date. I didn’t do sleepovers or romance or any of that stuff.
So why did I want it with her?
“I…” Words failed me, and I stood there like a gawking idiot.
Disappointment filled her expression as she pulled away from me, leaving my hand cold. “Well, this is embarrassing.” She backed away. “I’m just going to—” Dayna thumbed toward the house and slipped past me without so much as another glance. She ducked inside and closed the door in my face.
Ouch.
“Well, you really fucked that up,” Carson said with a mix of amusement and disappointment.
“I… she caught me off guard.”
“You’re telling me.” He scrubbed his jaw. “So when I told you to stay away from her, I’m guessing you took that as a green light to—”
“It just happened.”
“Yeah. Happens to me all the time too. My dick just falls into some unassuming girl’s pussy.”
“Seriously?” My brow lifted. “That’s Dayna you’re talking about.”
And I didn’t fucking like it.
“You like her.” His eyes narrowed. Cold. Assessing. As if he saw through all of my bullshit.
“It’s complicated.”
“Well, you’d better uncomplicate it because that woman is special,” he said. “She’s the best of them, Aiden. This shit with Josh should be all the proof you need that she doesn’t give herself to just anyone.”
“Shit, you think I don’t know that?” I rubbed the back of my neck and blew out a long breath. “I fucked up.”
“Yeah, you did, Dumfries. The question is, what are you going to do about it?”
My eyes snapped to his, narrowing. “You’re giving me your blessing?”
“Hell no. I’m telling you that if you ever hurt her, you can kiss your senior year with the Lakers goodbye.” His words sounded serious, but a faint smirk traced his mouth. “I don’t know what’s really going on with the two of you, but I also know that you’re both old enough to make your own mistakes.”
“Geez, thanks for the vote of confidence,Coach.”
His smirk grew. “Just promise me, you won’t knowingly hurt her. That’s all I can ask.”
“I would never…”
“Yeah, something tells me that’s the truth. I’m going to find Derek and see if he’ll break out the good stuff. I need a strong drink after this.” He walked off, but I called after him.
“Coach?”
“Yeah, Dumfries?”
“Thanks for everything.”
He gave me a small nod and disappeared around the side of the house.
