Come get me. I dare you,Alex said to himself.
Since Benson would be on his own, Alex needed to finish off both of these wolves quickly and help him. Luckily, he didn’t suck at fighting. Propelling himself forward, he leapt onto the black wolf’s back, bit down on his neck and tore as much muscle as he could. The animal would recover, but he wouldn’t be running around for a while.
The multi-colored wolf had healed enough in order to lunge at Alex and managed to take a chunk out of his shoulder blade.Damn. That was careless on Alex’s part. He’d been worried that the black wolf would rally. Instead, he should have paid more attention to that second wolf.
Out of nowhere, Liam appeared, fresh and ready to go. As much as Alex wanted to ask him where the shooters were and how the sheriff was doing, he’d find out soon enough.
It only took seconds to eliminate the black wolf. In the fray, the mixed-gray wolf had limped off while the pure-gray wolf had died, his body now in its human form.
“Let’s see who else needs help,”Alex said, telling himself he had to remember to come back for his phone.
He and Liam charged in the direction of the growls. Turned out Benson was fighting two wolves, but he was keeping one wolf between him and the second wolf, making Alex proud. While Benson was bleeding from his flank and leg, neither injuries looked serious. However, Alex was sure he’d appreciate the assistance.
In short order, the tan wolf fighting Benson was put down, and the other one wouldn’t be seeing the light of day again either.
“Thanks,”Benson telepathed.
As they turned to help Zach and Preston, both came toward them, obviously having defeated their enemy. It would appear as if those in charge of taking out the sheriff’s backup had failed. Badly.
Alex shifted and the others followed. He turned toward Liam. “Who were the shooters and what happened to them?”
“I know Mason will be disappointed, and Tawny will be upset, but they were Brad and Julia Smith.”
“Another woman sniper? Interesting. I bet she wasn’t nearly as good as Charley Palmer. Now that woman could hit a dime a hundred yards away.”
They’d met Charley on their first job with the general. “All I know is that Brad’s bullet hit the side of the cruiser and the second one nailed the sheriff in the shoulder. Julia’s shot hit the sheriff in the leg. I’m assuming they noticed the flak jacket.”
“Did you take them out?” Alex asked as they made their way back to where he’d stashed his phone.
“I did, but I was kind. I hit Julia in her rifle arm and Brad in his thigh. He screamed.”
“Did they try to run?”
“They did, but I got to Julia first and hogtied her to a tree. I then went after Brad. Let’s just say he wasn’t moving very fast.”
“Where are they now?” Benson asked.
“Noah arrived and placed them in the cruiser. He then put the sheriff in his car. They took off, though I didn’t ask where.”
Alex picked up his phone on the way to the accident site. He looked around but the satchel was gone. “Shit.”
“Where is the money?” Zach asked. “Or better yet, where is my sister?”
CHAPTERTWENTY-SIX
They all searchedfor the bag that contained the ransom money, but couldn't find it.
“Mason, where are you?” Liam called.
“Coming.” He seemed to be tangled in a vine, but eventually made it out. “Shit. Did anyone see how Dad was?”
Liam explained what he saw. “I imagine your dad will call Augustine Weston to see about having those bullets removed.”
“I hope so, but Dad is stubborn. He'll try to push through it. He wants to find Tawny.”
He imagined that was true. “Mason, did you catch much with the camera?”
He tapped his long lens. “Hell yeah. Got the men’s faces as well as the license plate number of the black truck they were driving. And before you ask, I already texted both Seth and Trevor the information. They should be following them as we speak.”
