“What’s wrong,” Alex asked.
Liam relayed what Brett said. “Something must have happened to her.”
Preston, Benson, and his twin brothers came over. “Do you think it’s the same group who shot Zach?” Benson asked.
“I don’t know. I told Brett one of us would go over to the center. He sounded like he could use some support. The rest of us should look for Tawny.”
“Maybe you should go to the center, and I’ll drive toward town to see if she broke down or had an accident. That storm out there sounds really bad,” Alex said.
“It is.”
“If she broke down, wouldn’t she have called?” Benson asked.
“Maybe her cell died,” Liam said.
“Anything is possible. Storms often create havoc with reception too.”
“Since you all will be looking for Tawny—which is something I can’t do—how about one of you drop me back at the house? My sister might have been able to limp home. Or maybe she flagged down a motorist and is on her way there now.”
“Let’s hope that’s what happened,” Liam said.
“I can drive him back to your place,” Preston said.
“Great. Thanks,” Zach said.
Alex placed a hand on Liam’s wrist. “If she had made it back to our house, wouldn’t she have let Brett know?”
“Yes, she would. I’m not thinking clearly.”
Benson stepped forward. “Let me call my uncle. He can be the point person for this. I have all of your numbers. I’ll make sure he has them too.”
It was nice to have a level head around. Liam turned to Seth and Trevor. “Do you mind speaking with Brett again to see if maybe he misunderstood what Tawny said. If he adds nothing new, go ahead and ask him to lock up.”
“We can do that,” Seth said. He nodded to his brother, and they both slipped on their jackets on the way out.
As soon as they opened the barn door, cold air and snow flew in. The storm was bad.
Once everyone had their assignment, he and Alex rushed to Liam’s truck. He started the engine and peeled out of there.
“Respect Mother Nature,” Alex said.
Liam slowed down. “I didn’t even know a storm was brewing an hour ago.”
“Mountains are unpredictable like that,” Alex said.
Liam turned toward town. “Tawny visited Mason before she called Brett. Why don’t you call him and see if he has a different perspective on where she might be? She does seem to like to make her rounds. For all we know, she could be talking with Ariel, or she decided to stop off at her place to pick up more clothes.”
“Let’s hope, though she should have been able to find someone with a working phone and contact Brett. She’d know he’d be worried.” Alex dialed Mason’s number and put his cell on speaker.
“Hey, Alex.”
“Tawny never made it back to the center after she left your place. Do you remember what time she took off?”
“Ah…maybe two hours ago? But she was headed to Will’s place after she left my office. I was about to lock up, grab some pizzas, and head on over to your house. At least that was the plan.”
Then she wouldn’t just take off. “This is Liam. Thanks, we’ll see what Will has to say.”
“Call me when you know something.”
