“We found Zach’s truck—or rather Mason did.”
She stepped inside the room and closed the door. “Where was it?”
“About fifteen miles from the park in a ditch.”
“Was it parked there or did someone drive it into a tree or something?” she asked.
“It looked okay, but I had it towed to Joe’s Garage shop. I’m hoping Ethan can figure out how they stole it. The thieves might have looked through Zach’s bag and taken his key—assuming the thieves are the same people who shot him. If not, they could have hot-wired his truck. Ethan will check to see if there is any damage to the vehicle.”
“I’m sure my cousin will check it over thoroughly. Did you dust for fingerprints?” she asked. “The shooter might have been the one to steal the car.”
“Young lady, I am the sheriff of this town. I know how to process a crime scene.”
She hadn’t meant to insult him. “Okay, just asking.”
“How is Zach this morning?” he asked.
Tawny explained about her brother’s desire to improve his fighting skills. “Alex and Liam promise that Zach will sit on the sidelines at least for today.”
“They are good men,” he said.
They were, though she hadn’t expected her father to make that comment. Did he sense one, or maybe both, were her mates? Now wasn’t a good time to ask. “I have to go, Dad.”
“Love you.”
“Love you too.”
Once she hung up, she looked around her office. It was in worse shape than Mason’s. Now that she wasn’t looking for Zach, she had the time to do something about it. After a quick search online, she ordered a bookcase and a file cabinet that would be delivered to the center, hopefully by tomorrow. Sure, she could have taken the time to go downtown and try to find the perfect item, but this was easier.
Having completed step one of the clean-up process, she tackled some bills. It was close to four when her cell rang. It was her dad again. “What’s up?”
“Someone tried to kill Ethan.”
“What? Holy shit. Sorry.” Her parents frowned on her swearing. “Is he okay?” Her pulse shot into overdrive.
“Yes, they missed because his werewolf reflexes allowed him to spot the gun in time. Ethan ducked behind the truck he was working on. However, since Joe’s Garage has been broken into a few times this year, the owner carries a gun. Joe heard a noise, came out, and shot the person.”
“This might be what we’ve been waiting for. The shooter could have been the one who tried to kill Zach.”
“I agree, but he got away before Joe could shoot him again. Apparently, Joe only nicked him in the leg. From the little amount of blood on the ground, the wound wasn’t severe.”
“Could either Joe or Ethan describe the assailant?”
“Ethan said he couldn’t see the man’s face since he wore a ski mask. Joe said the same thing but added that the man was close to six feet and was Caucasian. From his agile movements, they agreed the guy was fairly young. They guessed around thirty.”
“Zach said the man who shot him had a scarf over most of his face, wore a ski cap, and he was about Zach’s age. It could be the same person.”
“That was my thought. I’m running the prints I found on the car through the database, but so far I haven’t gotten a hit.”
“Maybe he’s never been caught before,” she said.
“That might be the case. Listen, I called because I am really worried for all of us.”
“I’m worried about all of us too. Will might be next. I mean, his sign screams of the Granger name.”
“I know. You worry about staying safe, and I’ll take care of the rest of the family,” he said. “I can’t lose you. No heroics, you hear?”
“I promise.” He couldn’t do it alone, though. Or rather, he and his deputy weren’t enough to stop these people. “I’m sure Alex and Liam are willing to help.”
