“You bet.”
Before Tawny got out, she checked the area for anyone suspicious and then rushed up to his house. Zach had given her his spare key a few years ago, which came in handy now.
She carried in her backpack, so that when she left, no one would notice she had a bunch of Zach’s belongings. Since space was limited, she kept to the basics like his razor, toothbrush, and about four days' worth of clothes. She could always come back for more.
Next stop was Mason’s office. Before she drove there, however, she wanted to be sure he was at the office, so she called him.
He picked up right away. “How’s Zach? I heard you, Alex, and Liam found him.”
Here we go again.“I’ll fill you in, but how about we meet in person. I don’t like phones. I’m driving.”
He chuckled. “Paranoid much?”
She guessed he didn’t buy the not wanting to be on the phone when she drove comment. So what if she had a handsfree phone? “When we meet, you’ll understand.”
“Sure, come to the office, or do you want to meet someplace else?”
He’d told her he often swept his office for bugs. “I’ll come to you.”
If she’d been thinking straight, Tawny would have stopped to see Mason before returning to the center. His office was only a block or two away from her father's. Good thing nothing was very out of the way in Wildwood.
When Tawny returned to town, she parked behind Mason's building and entered. His office was still a mess. While he had file cabinets, none of the file folders appeared to be in them. Most sat on top of them. For someone so computer savvy, he should have more of the information on line. “You need to clean this up, brother.”
He chuckled. “You should talk. Your office is worse than mine.”
“True, but the public doesn’t see my space.”
“Any time you want to help straighten it up, you’re welcome to it. I could use a good file clerk.”
“No, thank you.”
Even though no one was in his main area, he motioned they sit in his office. “Tell me everything. But before you start, can I record this?”
“Sure, if you think it will help.”
“I might be able to find information on what happened to Zach, and I don’t want to have any details wrong. He’s my brother, too, you know.”
She smiled. “I’m well aware of that.”
Tawny had two goals. First was to tell Mason what she knew, and secondly to see if he could use any help. Then her promise to Julia would be fulfilled.
When she finished filling him in, Mason shook his head. “I’ve never heard of anything so horrible. They used bullets coated with some kind of sedative and then carved our family crest in his back?”
“Yup. How he managed to crawl into the cave is nothing short of a miracle.”
“You were damned lucky to have Alex and Liam with you. Otherwise you might not have found him.”
“I know.”
“Speaking of them, did you know they asked if you were interested in a ménage relationship?” Mason raised his eyebrows.
She sucked in a breath. Part of her was upset that they’d speak with Mason about her, but on the other hand, she was honored that they would even ask. Unfortunately, Tawny was still so confused about her feelings for them. She wasn’t sure what she even wanted. “Is that right? What did you tell them?”
“You weren’t into that lifestyle.”
“Good.”
That was true, but it didn’t mean if the right men came along that she couldn’t change her mind. While Tawny was tempted to ask Mason about the signs a man exhibited if he found his mate, there was no reason to believe Mason would know. He’d not found his one-and-only. If he had, he hadn’t mentioned it to her.
