“Okay. I’ll need a week.”
“Sorry, Charlie. That’s too long. I can give you three days.
“We’ll be ready, Max,” Inessa said and took her husband’s hand.
“I’ll make it up to you, guys. I swear.”
I left my sister’s house feeling like a common criminal.
You’re going to pay for this, Grigoriy, if it’s the last thing I do!

Mom and I were having lunch at her favorite spot. She and the waitress had a long chat–Mom was a regular. I was about to join Inessa, Charlie, and Jeremy in the safehouse the DEA had arranged for us, so I had to think on my feet.
“This is such a lovely surprise, my love. I was so glad when you called. You’ve been such a busy little bee.”
“I missed you too, Mom. How’s Dad?”
“You know your dad. Always busy with something or another. He and Paula are planning a golf tour for the gang. Honestly, it will be a nice break for me.”
“It sounds like you’re going to have quite a bit of time on your hands.”
“I’ll get to spend it with you.”
“Uhm, about that. Max and I were thinking of going away for a few weeks before the baby comes.”
“Oh. Well, that sounds nice. Where are you thinking of going? Are you sure you’re okay to travel?”
“I’m only seven months along. I’ll be fine. Besides, I checked with my doctor and she’s happy with the baby's progress.”
“Okay. In that case. Where are you two lovebirds off to?”
“Not sure yet. Probably a drive along the coast. We’ll stop off when we see a spot we like.”
“That’s so romantic, Angel. It’s not a bad idea, actually. Life with a newborn can be crazy. This trip will give you and Max an opportunity to enjoy each other.”
“I agree. I’m just sorry I won’t be here to keep an eye on you while Dad’s away.”
“Don’t you worry about me, my love. I’ll get the girls over for a game or six of bridge.”
“You’d better get plenty of rest, too. Once your grandson comes, I’m going to need you in tip-top shape.”
“Deal.”
Who knew what excuse I’d have to come up with if my ordeal lasted longer than anticipated? Then, I'd be forced to tell my parents the truth. I wasn’t looking forward to that.
I maintained my composure during our breakfast together, but the minute I dropped Mom off at home and drove away, I let out a few tears. Bloody hormones had turned me into a real crybaby.
I went home and waited for Agents Stevens to call me. The call came shortly after noon.
“Hello, Angelica. How are you holding up?”
“Hi. I’m okay, thanks, Brent. What’s happening?”
“I’ll send you a pin location. It’s a mechanic’s workshop downtown. Meet me there at 11 am tomorrow. Bring a bag with your things but leave it in the trunk of your car. We’ll make sure you get it.”
