“Kinda. It is a very special time. Enjoy it.”
“I’ll try.”
“The doctor will see you now.”
Max and I got up and followed the doctor’s assistant. I squeezed Max’s hand tightly.
“Hello, there,” she smiled when we entered her office. “Angel, you look radiant. Hello, Max.”
“Hi, Doc. Yup, I feel great.”
“Hello,” Max smiled. “Good to see you.”
“So. How is baby behaving?”
“It’s a hungry little monkey,” Max grinned.
“Eating for two, hey?” the doctor chuckled.
“Feels like this baby is never satisfied,” I laughed.
“Have you decided? Do you want to know the sex of the baby?”
Max and I exchanged a quick glance.
“Yes,” I answered. “We’d love to know.”
“Okay, then. Let’s get you onto the bed and see if baby wants to reveal its gender. Sometimes they like to hide.”
“I’ll coax the baby to turn with a slice of pizza if I have to,” I stated and lay back on the examination bed.
“That won’t be necessary,” Max added. “I’m sure the candy bar in your purse will do the trick.”
“That’s what I like to see,” the doctor laughed. “Teamwork.”
She wiped my belly with a swab and squirted clear jelly just under my navel. The jelly was cold, so I took in a sharp breath.
“Sorry. It will warm up quickly.”
Max sat next to the bed, held my hand, and watched the screen while the doctor pressed a succession of buttons and moved a few nobs.
“There,” she said.
Max and I stared at the screen and then at each other.
“What are we looking at, Doc?” Max asked.
“There’s the head. That’s the body and there are the arms and legs.”
“Okay, I’ll take your word for it,” I giggled nervously.
“And there it is,” she said and pointed to a spot on the screen. “Congrats. You’re having a boy.”
“A boy,” I said with a teary voice.
“I called it,” Max said proudly and kissed me.
“You sure did. Oh, Max. We’re having a little you.”
