“Okay.”

“We have between now and then to chat if there’s anything you need to ask me,” he carried on.

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

“Would you like to join me for dinner?”

His question took me by surprise. He sensed my reticence.

“I’m not going to try and seduce you,” he said with a look of amusement. “I wanted to run a few things by you. Work, that is.”

“Sure. When were you thinking?”

“Is this evening too short notice?”

Like a fool, I looked at my watch–as if the time was a crucial factor.

“Uh, yeah. Tonight’s fine.”

“Great. I’ll swing by your office at six. Unless you want to change before we go out.”

“No, six is fine.”

“Excellent. I’ll see you at six.”

My heart was beating uncomfortably fast. I hoped I wasn’t going to act like a schoolgirl with a crush every time Max spoke to me. Damn it! Why did it have to be him?

I got up and left my boss’ office. I didn’t have to look back to know that Max was staring at my ass. He couldn’t get enough of my butt the night we’d gone at it like a couple of horny teenagers. At one point he dropped to his knees and bit one of my ass cheeks. It was an incredible rush at the time, but I was paying the piper now–with considerable interest.

Before I could blink, it was 6 pm. I was thankful that Max and I would be dining. I was starving. My boss was perfectly punctual.

“Ready?” he asked as he stood in my office doorway.

“Ready.”

“Shall we take my car? I’ll drop you back at yours after dinner.”

“Okay.”

I didn’t care how we got there. I had to get some food down my neck before I got hangry.

“I have to ask,” Max said while I was digging into my entree. “What were you doing at my birthday party? You seemed out of place.”

“I was helping out a friend.”

“Ah.”

There was a brief silence. Not completely silent, as I was painfully aware that I was a noisy chewer.

“How’s your steak?”

“I have to tell you, Max, that this is a little awkward for me.” I blurted out.

Max seemed a little amused by my discomfort.

“Why?”
