“Sounds good. I hope I can stop worrying about this until then,” he said.

“I’m telling you that you have nothing to worry about. I was going to ask you what’s wrong with your current lawyer?”

“Too busy to take my case on in its entirety.”

“I’m sure Marilyn will take it on. I don’t think you need to worry about that. She’s a good person,” I told him, and I believed it with my whole heart.

I went next door to check on her, and she was napping on the sofa, with the TV playing some kind of romance movie. I stood there for a moment, admiring how pretty she was. Although her amber eyes were the focal point of her face, with them absent in the picture, she was still able to arouse me easily.

I walked over to her and wrapped the blanket around her shoulders when her eyes brushed open. A smile spread across her face slowly. “Thank you, Chris.” I was about to go back outside when she said, “Stay.”

I looked at her, unsure whether I had heard her right.

“Stay with me. Just until I fall back to sleep,” she repeated.

“Okay, sure. I can do that.” She was sprawled out on the sofa, so I went to sit in the chair when she moved her feet.

“Sit beside me,” she said sweetly.

I could not resist.

She moved her position so that she could lean against me. She took my arm and draped it around her shoulders as she snuggled into my chest. “I hope you don’t mind watching my romance movie for a while. I know how much men detest that.”

“I don’t mind at all. I like a good chick flick,” I said.

She looked up at me. “No, you don’t. No man does.”

“I’m not joking. I’m a romantic at heart,” I told her truthfully. I probably liked romance more than the average person. I was okay with that.

“I should tell you then that I also like action and thriller movies. You?” she asked.

“I thriller and comedies. I like action, but I like the other three better,” I answered.

“You’re different than most of the guys I’ve known,” she said.

“Different good or different bad?” I asked, curious.

“Definitely different good, in more ways than you’ll ever know.”

What did that mean? I’d give anything to be able to see inside her mind and know what she’s thinking.I think that was every man’s dream. It would certainly cut out a lot of heartache in this world.

“Feel free to tell me,” I told her.

“I will. One day. You’ll just need to be patient,” she said.

“I can do that. I’m not going anywhere,” I said. I wasn’t sure if she heard me because I heard her breathing change and her head became like a dead weight on my chest. And I couldn’t be happier. I decided I might as well get a little nap in too.

FIFTEEN

MARILYN

For the past week, whenever I woke up, I always had Chris on my mind before anything else. That was usually because I was steadily dreaming of him in my sleep. Up until the past few days, it had been annoying, but now I was intrigued. The one I’d just had was the sexiest of all of them, and I sat up quickly, realizing I was extremely aroused. I went and had a shower right away, hoping it would get the images out of my mind.

No such luck.

I took refuge on the sofa again and watched a couple of movies, breaking only to have lunch, which Chris had made and stored in the fridge for me. I managed to get some work done in the afternoon, then I had another nap as well and woke up to the sun shining through the curtains on my face.

I sat up. That’s it. I’d had enough of the indoors and decided today would be all about getting some sun. I knew I was supposed to rest and relax, but relaxing could also mean doing things that made me happy. Being outside made me happy.
