“No need to apologise.” Caroline pulled Hannah back in by the waist. “None of that was on you. I’m just glad I was there to stop it.”
“I love you.” Hannah tucked Caroline’s hair behind her ear, smiling into a kiss. They swayed together, slow dancing to a song on the radio, Hannah’s eyes beaming with love. “And I love nights like this together. It’s cold outside but so warm in here. Because you’re here with us.”
God, Caroline couldn’t deal with Hannah when she said things like that. It was too much for her heart. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”
Edie cleared her throat, leaning against the doorframe. “You two should get married!”
Hannah laughed as she pulled away. “And you need to sit down and eat before you get me into trouble, Edie Caffrey!”
* * *
Hannah stretched her body, grinning when Caroline slid in behind her on the couch and spooned her. Edie lay sprawled on the other couch, scrolling through her phone. Considering Edie wanted to watch some new show, she was doing nothing to make it happen.
“Love, if you want to watch TV, we should start. It’s six already.”
Edie locked her phone and turned her attention to Hannah and Caroline. “Could I…stay up later tonight?”
Oh. Hannah hadn’t expected that. “Of course.”
“I’ll be okay, won’t I?”
Hannah frowned. “Okay?”
Edie sat up. “If I go to bed later. You and Caz won’t be going to bed the same time as me, will you?”
“No. we won’t go to bed until you’re snoring.”
“Okay.” Edie lay back down and returned to her phone.
As Hannah watched her, Caroline pressed a kiss below her ear and whispered, “That’s a good sign.”
It was. It was averygood sign.
Hannah settled her hand over the one resting on her stomach, entwining her fingers with Caroline’s. “She feels safer having you here.”
Hannah felt Caroline relax against her, a light sigh audible. “Good.”
“So, what’s this show you want to watch?”
“Oh, it’s about lesbians,” Edie said, not looking up from her phone. “We had another talk in school a few days ago. It’s important that people from the LGBTQ+ community feel represented in TV and film, so I found something you and Caz might enjoy.”
Hannah sat up on her elbow, clearing her throat when Caroline’s hand ‘accidentally’ slid to her arse. “That’s really lovely, but what is it?”
“Don’t worry, it’s educational too. Historical.”
That instantly caught Caroline’s attention. “Oh, that’s great! Maybe you could speak to Mrs Hale about discussing it in your history class.”
“Yeah.” Edie put her phone down again, interested now that Caroline had struck up more conversation. “It’s basically about a 19th-century landowner from Yorkshire. She had these really cool secret diaries. You know with like code in them?”
Hannah and Caroline looked to one another, grinning as they both said, “Anne Lister.”
“You know who she is?”
“Um, yeah.” Hannah snorted. “We all know who she is.”
Caroline placed a hand to Hannah’s hip, interjecting. “Edie, this show you want to watch…is it a documentary?”
“No. Her diaries have been turned into a period drama. It’s calledGentleman Jack.”
