“Maybe so, but again, I don’t remember a five ten blonde. Did you see dark roots? Maybe she was a brunette when I dated her.”
Tracy loses it then and begins screaming while flailing her arms about.
“No, I have no idea if she had dark roots because this was hard for me, Rick! Do you know what it’s like to open the front door to see a beautiful young woman who claims your boyfriendgot her pregnant? She had a belly too even though she was only six to ten weeks along!”
I frown.
“No, it honestly doesn’t sound like a woman I know, and this is seriously getting weird because I wasn’t seeing anyone in the recent past. I mean, yes, I’ve been with a lot of women, but I was actually going through a dry spell when I met you. Well, as dry as can be for an asshole like me,” I add in a wry tone. But then, suddenly everything clicks.
“Did she refer to me by name?” I ask, my blue eyes glinting.
“Of course!” Tracy screams. “Why, you think she just showed up asking to speak with the lord of the manor?”
That only confirms my suspicions and I shake my head before biting out the word, “Fucker.”
“What? What is it?” Tracy shrieks, her eyes bulging now. “Tell me what’s going on! Stop pretending you don’t know this girl because it fuckinghurtsto be in my position!”
I look up to meet my girlfriend’s eyes, and take a deep breath.
“I know this is going to sound really strange, but I genuinely don’t know this Savannah person. In fact, I can say with certainty that I’ve never met her.”
“Then how did she get pregnant?” Tracy shouts. “Through immaculate conception? I don’t think so!”
I shake my head.
“No, I think it was my identical twin brother, James,” I say. “He probably told this poor girl that he was me, and has been pulling the wool over her eyes since.”
That gets Tracy’s attention.
“Your identical twin brother?” she repeats in a slow tone. “Are you joking? Am I being punked?”
I sigh, my shoulders slumping.
“Unfortunately, this isn’t a joke,” is my somber reply. “It’s something that only happened recently. I think I’ve mentioned that I’m adopted, right? It’s never been a huge deal for me, nor did I ever make any attempt to contact my biological family because it didn’t matter. But about a year ago, I was pinged randomly by a dude who looked exactly like me, and I meanexactly. He claimed to be my twin brother, and our likenesses were so similar that I actually replied.”
Tracy’s mouth has dropped open.
“So was this person your twin?”
I nod, shrugging.
“Yeah, evidently he’d taken a DNA test and entered it into some genealogical database. The database will direct users to potential relatives, and I guess there were significant genetic markers indicating that we were not only related, but closely related. Anyways, James, as he introduced himself, said that our DNA showed that we were identical twins. Evidently, we’d been split up at birth and adopted by different families. He’d asked his adoptive parents about me many times, but they had no idea where I’d ended up and couldn’t help.”
Tracy gasps.
“OMG!”
I nod.
“I know, right? It totally blew my mind when it happened. Especially because my adoptive parents never mentioned anything about a twin, so to have this guy James popping out of the woodwork was insane. Plus, as I mentioned, we’re identical and it seems that biology is destiny because even our friends were unable to tell us apart at first. Can you imagine meeting someone who’s your mirror image?”
Tracy shakes her head slowly.
“No, because it sounds crazy. But you think James got Savannah pregnant?”
I sigh.
“Yeah, probably. He’s such a … well, I’ll be respectful and reserve judgment until we figure it out, but yeah, that’s what I think.”
