“Okay.”
She’s quiet as I work on her. Her skin is creamy white and smooth, but I can’t help but notice a few scars. Most are old, but some look fresh.
Running my fingertip over the puckered skin on her stomach, I ask, “What happened here?”
“I was stabbed.”
“Job went wrong?”
She stills. “No. I…I trusted the wrong person. When I told him no, he cut me so that I’d always remember him.”
Rage tints my vision.
“Name?”
“What?”
“What is his name?”
“Steve Davidson.” Her tongue darts over her bottom lip. “What are you going to do, Finn?”
I could lie and tell her nothing, but that’s not who I am.
“I’m going to let you in on a little secret. The Behr Family is one of the three Families that runs the city. Atticus is our Don. Oliver the Capo.”
“And you?”
“Me?” I smile. “I’m a soldier. Want to know what soldiers do best?”
She’s breathless as she asks, “What?”
“We hunt monsters who stab pretty women and show them what it feels like.”
Her lips part. “Good.”
“Good,” I agree.
Right then and there, I know this woman is going to change the Behr Family forever.

Finn finishes stitching me up, all while I replay his words to me.
“Can I come?”
He glances up. “What?”
“When you find Steve. Can I come and watch?”
I’m not sure what he’s going to do, because tales of the Mafia and their actions are widespread and probably a bit exaggerated. But I still want to be there.
“Sure. We’ll have to make sure you’re in all black.”
“Black?”
“To hide the blood.” He eyes me. “Of course, it might be hot to see blood on your creamy skin.”
