“Sure.” I snort. “Then I’d wager you only work on crooks and criminals, because that’s the only type of person out and about during your work hours.”

“Don’t forget the sex workers.”

“What?”

“Criminals. Crooks. Made Men. And sex workers.”

I still. Made Men? I’ve heard all about Made Men. You’d have to be living under a rock to not know the term. Is he implying he’s one?

“What did Oliver say he did for a living again?”

“Oliver? He runs a tech company.”

Again, this doesn’t make sense because of the hours they keep.

“And Atticus?”

“Atticus is a CEO of sorts.”

Of sorts? Like a Don? Do I even want to know? Ignorance is bliss, right?

“What’s wrong, Goldie? You’re looking a bit green.” There’s no concern in his voice.

“How…” God, if I ask this, this will change everything. I know it. “How do you know Wolfe?”

“I wondered how long it would take you to ask. He was married to our mother for a short time before leaving her for another woman.” He frowns. “We could have handled that. But he took every cent from her account. She had to sell her jewelry just to get by. Three pieces her first husband bought her. Jewelry Wolfe thinks should be his. Can you guess what the pieces are?”

I already know because I’ve already stolen two of the three pieces.

“Why does he want them?”

“At this point, I’d guess it’s solely to piss us off.”

“Why?”

“So many questions.” He smiles. “I warned my brothers that you might be a spy, you know. Told them we shouldn’t trust you.”

The air is tense around us, like I should take a step back. God knows I’ve been hit before, but I don’t think he’ll hurt me. No, his anger is for Wolfe.

“I’m not a spy.”

“Why are you working for him, then?”

“Because he pays well, and I need money to find out who killed my friend.”

“Your friend?”

“Her name was Red. Taught me everything I know after taking me in from the streets when I ran away when I was thirteen.”

“I’ve heard of Red before. Used to wear a red riding hood when she’d rob people, right?”

I smile, thinking of her in that hood. “Yeah. That’s her.”

“I hadn’t heard she had died. I’m sorry for your loss.”

“Thank you.” I pause. “It was ruled a suicide, but I know that’s BS. We had plans and were going to get out of this city after we fulfilled the contract with Wolfe.”

This gets his attention. “Both of you were working with Wolfe? What was she stealing for him?”
