She arched a brow. “I thought we agreed youweren’ta stalker.”
A slow smile spread on his face, but he blanked it quickly enough. “My assistant contacted hotel security. All staff details are registered there. They gave her your address.”
Abby’s lips parted in surprise. “I can’t believe that. What a violation! That information is supposed to be private. What if you really were a stalker? Or an abusive ex? That’s appalling!”
“I don’t disagree.”
“But you don’t really care, because you got what you wanted.”
“I own a large stake in the hotel chain,” he said quietly. “I imagine my assistant used that fact to smooth away any of the usual objections.”
Ofcoursehe owned a large stake in the hotel chain. “That’s so not okay.”
“No,” he agreed, but with a nonchalant shrug. “But when I tried calling your number, it connected me to an angry woman in LA. I didn’t know how to reach you, and we do need to talk.”
“You couldn’t have asked the hotel for my phone number? Turning up on my doorstep this early in the morning is…weird.”
“Oh, and waiting to jump me in the alley was what?”
She sucked in a breath. “Are you complaining?”
“NO.” He tore his fingers through his hair. “We didn’t use protection.”
She blinked at him, absolutely shocked that fact hadn’t occurred to her until now. She squeezed her eyes shut as she replayed their frantic coming together. There’d been no time. “Yeah, well, I didn’t exactly turn up to work expecting that to happen.”
“Nor did I.”
“I find that hard to believe.”
He lifted a dark brow, his expression cynical. “You think I somehow intuited that we’d bump into each other after two years?”
“I think you would have gone home with someone. You always have condoms in your wallet.”
His eyes narrowed. “Well, I didn’t use one last night.”
She swallowed, furious with herself for making such a monumental mistake. Even before, when they’d been together, they’d never once forgotten. She’d liked how careful he was. She’d felt protected. Safe, even though she was already on the pill. But last night had been – madness.
“I didn’t think,” she whispered, lifting a hand to her lips.
“Do you know where you’re at in your cycle?”
She stared at him, the words not making any sense.
“It’s not foolproof, but it will give us an idea of the likelihood of complications arising from what we shared.”
Her ears started to ring. “Complications,” she repeated, heat rushing through her face.
“I should have used a condom.” His voice was laced with anger. “I have never once made that omission. In terms of safety, we’re fine. But…”
“You’re worried we might have conceived a baby.”
“Are you on the pill?” He confirmed with a slight nod.
“Yes.” She was glad she could answer truthfully that she was. A little less glad when she considered that she’d been on the pill before, and they’d used condoms, and it still hadn’t been foolproof.
“Thank God.” He nodded jerkily. “Then we should be okay.”
His relief was palpable. She saw it in every line of his face. The gladness that they likely hadn’t conceived. “You really don’t want kids, huh?”
