I can’t afford to lose this job, and he seems to know that.

“I guess I’ll get going too,” I say untying my apron once Bella has left. I want to go to the back room to grab my personal items, but the thought of David following me back there terrifies me, so I decide I will just have to leave without them. Except when I try to leave, David steps in my path, stopping me.

“Can I help you?” I try, but fail to hide the fear in my voice.

“I see it in the way you look at me, it’s no secret that you want me.” I almost barf at his words. “You left before we could finish our conversation this afternoon.”

If by “leaving,” he means fled when his fingers “accidentally” brushed my ass and thus ruined the rest of my day, then sure.

“Look, David, you must have read me wrong…”

He grabs my wrist and pulls me closer, but his grip on me is gone just as soon as I feel its sting.

“What the–”

David doesn’t get to complete his sentence before he is flying halfway across the room and into the wall.

CHAPTER TWO

Maddox

It’s too soon.

I’m not ready for us to be thrust together, and yet, I had no other choice. When April’s chirpy co-worker exited the bakery with an anxious look on her, I knew something was not right.

Unlike all the times I stood right outside the shop’s window to watch her, this time, I was across the street, waiting for her to leave so I could follow her home. When she didn’t emerged as she usually did, I knew something was wrong.

I was right.

“W-who the fuck are you?” the bastard who dared to touched April hisses from where he lays sprawled on the hard floor, struggling to get up.

He’s still breathing!

That is all I can think about. The man is still breathing when he shouldn’t. I start for him when a tiny frame steps right in front of me, palms to my chest, stopping me in my tracks.

My icy blue eyes meet her warm brown ones, and I feel myself melt. Just like the first day I met her, I am frozen in my steps with no idea what to do, or say.

“You know him?” The man’s annoying voice breaks me from my stupor, and I glare in his direction, ready to storm over and end his pathetic life when a gentle push reminds me of the angel standing between us.

She shakes her head when I turn to look at her. “Let’s go,” she whispers, sliding her hand into mine. Her slight fingers close around my large hand, and I force my eyes from her face to where they are joined.

It feels so natural.

“Your things,” I manage to say when she drags me towards the door.

“Oh, right.” She chews at her lower lip as her eyes ping pong between me and the man on the floor. It’s obvious she is worried about leaving me with the man, and she is justified in her worries. After a few minutes alone with him, there will barely be anything left for the cops to scrape off the floor.

“Please don’t hurt him, I won’t take long,” She looks up to meet my eyes before shyly looking away. My eyes shift to her tongue peeking out, and I have to hold back a groan. Just the thought of her was enough to send an ache to my cock, but being this close to her, touching her has my cock swelling in an instant.

“Promise me.”

I don’t want to, but I find that I can’t exactly say no to her. She doesn’t leave until I acknowledge her words, which I do with a simple nod. The second she disappears into the back door, I move towards the man and crouch beside him.

“I will kill you.”

It’s not a joke, and from the way his eyes widen in fright, I can tell he doesn’t take it as one. I am not one to make empty threats, but with the way he touched my girl, made her cower in fear, death would be a mercy from me.

“I… cops…”
