He walks over, albeit reluctantly. I also want to call Mr. Wilson out on the fact he sent this poor kid over here when he could have taken the note and given it to me myself, but I keep my mouth shut, wanting to see how this is going to play out.

The guy beside me, Jamie Carmichael, shifts in his seat again as amusement covers his features.

My fists curl beneath the desk, my need to pound them into his face almost too much to deny.

“Hey,” I say to the boy when he gets close. “Is that for me?”

He nods, thrusting the note at me.

“What’s your name, kid?”

“B-B-Benjamin R-Reynolds.”

I take the note from his trembling hand. “Thank you,” I say genuinely. “Hold your head high, Benjamin Reynolds. You have nothing to be scared of.”

A scoff comes from Jamie, only this time, he’s joined by a couple of his dickhead friends. They have to know it’s a dumb-arse move in front of me, but apparently mocking this terrified kid is worth the pain that will inevitably come.

“Th-thank you, sir.”

This time, someone full-on barks a laugh at him.

When I cut a look to my right, the laughter quickly dies.

“Have a good day.” I smile at him as he takes a step back. He glances at the dick beside me before looking back at Mr. Wilson and then practically running from the room.

“Pussy,” Jamie coughs as the door swings closed behind the kid.

“You got a death wish, Carmichael?” I breathe, my voice low and deadly.

He sucks in a sharp breath but doesn’t reply as Mr. Wilson barks at us to continue with our work.

I watch him as he follows orders like a good little puppy, ensuring he’s completely on edge and regretting his life decisions before I open the note that’s still in my hand.

Meeting in the sixth form library at the beginning of fourth period for an English lit revision session.

Mrs. Hendrix.

“Brilliant,” I hiss, earning myself a warning from Mr. Wilson.

Glancing at the clock behind his head, I find that we’ve only got ten minutes left. This was meant to be my last lesson of the day. I told myself before I even arrived this morning that I was going to leave and revise at home. Try and do the right thing where Brianna is concerned and stay out of her way. It seems fate has other issues. Plus, I’ve now got some games to play with Jamie. And I guess watching him cry for being a prick to that kid is worth sitting through a revision session for.

I don’t do any more of my exam paper. I’m too lost in thoughts of the girl who shouldn’t be anywhere near my head. But it seems she’s managed to worm her way in despite my attempts to keep her out.

It’s all Toby’s fault. If he never went on that revenge mission, then I never would have met her.

Then Toby never would have got vengeance on the cunt who claimed to be his father and find the love of his life.

Ugh, why does he need to be so worthy of all the happiness Jodie brings him? It makes it really fucking hard to hate him.

“I want these exam papers completed in exam conditions and handed in tomorrow. No excuses, no textbooks and no Google. It will not help you in the long run,” Mr. Wilson warns as everyone begins noticing the time and starts to fidget in their need to escape.

The bell rings out as I’m stuffing the paper into my bag and before everyone else, I stand from my chair and make for the door. But I don’t walk through it straight away. Instead, I pause and look back. My eyes collide with Jamie’s, the promise of unbelievable pain for tormenting that kid earlier crackling between us.

With that silent warning delivered, I take off, heading toward the toilets to take a piss before I go in search of Mrs. Hendrix in the library.
