My entire body is slammed to the side, crushed against the door, as the space around me seems to close in.

My head collides with the window, and I have to fight to stay conscious as the darkness creeps in.

“Nico,” I cry, desperately trying to look to my right, but my body won’t comply with my head. “Nico, please. Tell me you’re okay?”

Nothing.

Pure unfiltered fear seeps through me.

“Nico?” I sob, finally finding the strength to look over. I fucking wish I hadn’t, though, because he’s slumped forward over the wheel with blood dripping from somewhere. “NICO,” I scream, “NICO, WAKE UP,” I demand, focusing on his back, desperate to see some movement to tell me that he’s—

My stomach turns over and bile rushes up my throat.

“No, no. Please, Nico.”

My eyes drop as my adrenaline begins to slip, allowing the pain to descend as they lock on the corner of my phone sticking out of his pocket.

I need to get it. But he’s so far away, and as every second passes, the pain throughout my body is increasing to the point it’s becoming unbearable.

I have no idea what I’ve hurt, if I’m bleeding or anything. All I know is that I need to get that phone. I need to call someone.

Summoning some strength from deep down, I manage to lift my arm from my lap and reach over.

My fingers just brush the glass of my screen, but I can’t quite reach it.

“Fuck. Nico, come on. Be useful for once in your fucking life,” I beg as I throw my weight to my right, pain screaming from my back and up my neck, but that isn’t anything compared to the pounding in my skull. That is like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. Black spots swim in my vision, but I can’t let them win. I can’t. Not until I have that phone.

Finally, I manage to grasp it and wiggle it free from Nico’s pocket.

Bringing it in front of me, the brightness of the screen makes me wince and I find two messages staring back up at me.

Calli: Had another scan. Everything is perfect with little blob.

And then there’s a photo of the ultrasound.

Right there. On. My. Lock. Screen.

Images from the past twenty minutes flicker through my head like a movie.

“I know, Siren. I know what you’re hiding.”

The darkness comes faster as reality hits me.

Maybe he was trying to kill me.

My thumb hits my screen, in my head, I’m ringing Calli to warn her, but in reality, I have no idea what I’m really achieving as I sink into the darkness where pain and panic don’t exist.

“Calli,” I cry. “He knows. Nico knows. And it’s all my fault.”

And then, everything finally turns black.
